Udupi, Jun 8: Several undertrials of sub-jail at Kadelu here are suffering from chicken pox for the past many days. Five prisoners who are treated at district government hospital at Ajjarkad are believed to be affected by malaria too. Several of them are treated since the past many days.
Deputy tahsildar has written letter to send the doctors to sub-jail from district hospital. The doctors are visiting the sub-jail once in a fortnight besides when the need arises. It has been proposed to reserve one ward in district hospital for the inmates. A total of 58 prisoners are housed in 5 cells while 3 cells are still vacant.
As per the officers, many of the inmates are falling sick owing to severity of temperature. Moreover, the stagnant water around the premises believed to have added to their misery. The five inmates who are admitted at district hospital in Ajjarkad for fever are not yet confirmed of being afflicted with malaria, informed the district health and family welfare department officer, Dr M R Nayak.
According to district health and family welfare officer, Dr Sitaram Shetty only 2 malaria cases were reported in the past two months.
