Kamat afraid over Louis Berger case: Goa CM

Panaji, Aug 5 (IANS): Goa Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar on Wednesday said former chief minister Digambar Kamat was afraid over the Louis Berger case.

"He may feel afraid because of his involvement," Parsekar told reporters when asked to react on Kamat's decision on Wednesday to petition a special anti-corruption court for anticipatory bail in connection with the Louis Berger bribery scam.

Kamat, along with another former minister, has been questioned by the crime branch in connection with the Louis Berger international bribery scandal, in which the two Goan politicians have been accused of taking a $976,630 bribe from former officials of Louis Berger to secure the rights to implement a Rs.1,031 crore water and sewerage management project.

Louis Berger was part of a consortium that eventually won a contract to execute a multi-billion dollar water and sewerage project funded by the Japan International Co-operation Agency (JICA).

Two people, including the director of the JICA-funded project, Anand Wachasundar, and former India head of Louis Berger Satyakam Mohanty have already been arrested.

Congress legislator Kamat and Churchill Alemao, who served in Kamat's cabinet as PWD minister, have been questioned on more than one occasion.
