Udupi, Aug 3: A ‘Guru Vandana’ programme was observed by SVS Vidyavardhaka Sangha, Katpady, and the old students’ union of SVS Pre-University College, at the college hall on Friday July 31.
Dr Mohan Alva, president, Alva’s Education Institution, Moodbidri, speaking on the occasion, said, “Teachers are the cause for a decline in the number of Kannada medium schools. Poor teaching methods are also one of the reasons for shutting down of Kannada medium schools. The failure of Kannada means failure of the state.”
He further said, “We have to work on enrichment of regional languages and cultivating the rich cultural heritage of the nation. The Karnataka government is promoting the education sector but the achievement of Kannada medium schools is comparatively lower than that of students of English medium schools. However, teachers have to build their personality for the development of future generations.”
Dr Alva further said that government school teachers cannot teach CET students. “Therefore, students are approaching coaching classes. The teachers should be knowledgeable before shaping students’ lives and preparing them to face global challenges,” he added.
A farewell programme was organized for physical training teacher B Yuvaraj on the occasion. He had served for 31 years as a teacher and he thanked everyone for their support.
The management felicitated retired teachers for their dedicated service. They were Damodar Shenoy Suda, Devray Shenoy Suda, K Sadananda Shetty, Tarabai, Mary Monis, Lawrence Machado, Vishnu Kamat, Bhaskar Rao Agali, Shivarao, Hemavati M K, Shantabai,P Nalinidevi,Jayanthi M, B Rohini, C Prabhakar, and Sarvotham Kamath.
One of the felicitated teachers, Prabhakar, thanked everyone on behalf of all the others.
K Mahesh Shenoy, president, SVS Vidyavardhaka Sangha, presided over the programme.
Former MLA Lalaji R Mendon, Dr U K Shetty of Katpady, district Lions former governor Dr A Ravindranath Shetty, old students’ union president Prem Kumar, secretary Raghavendra Rao, and college principal Dr Dayananda Pai were present.
SVS High School teacher Shekhar Anchan welcomed the gathering, Bhaskar Kamath delivered the vote of thanks. Satishchandra Shetty Chitrapady compered the programme.
