Ind, Cong MLAs protest in House over Mahadev Naik ‘scam’

Porvorim, Jul 28 (TOI): The monsoon session of the Goa legislative assembly got off to a rousing start on Monday with opposition MLAs storming the well of the House as soon as the assembly convened, speaker Rajendra Arlekar ordering marshalls to eject three independent MLAs and the Congress immediately walking out in protest.

No sooner had the assembly convened at 11.30am, when independent MLAs Vijai Sardesai (Fatorda), Rohan Khaunte (Porvorim), Naresh Sawal (Bicholim) and Congress MLAs Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco (Curtorim) and Vishwajit Rane (Valpoi) raised slogans and displayed placards alleging a scam by industries minister Mahadev Naik. The MLAs then stormed the well of the House despite Arlekar's repeated directions to take up the issue with the government and not with him. With the MLAs continuing to disrupt the assembly, the speaker ordered marshalls to eject Sardesai, Khaunte and Sawal. The entire opposition then walked out in protest.

It was on July 26 that the independent MLAs ganged up with the Congress to demand the resignation of the industries minister.

Sardesai, Lourenco, Khaunte and Rane had given the government a two-day notice to "remove" Naik failing which they would not allow any proceedings in the assembly. Sardesai had even demanded that the chief minister sack Naik from the cabinet.

On Saturday, the independent MLAs alleged that the Shiroda MLA applied for a 30 lakh housing loan from the Goa legislative assembly but subsequently utilized the loan to purchase five shops.
