Mangaluru: Issue of solid waste management continues to bother city

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (DV)

Mangaluru, Jul 22: Mangaluru City Corporation last year handed over the responsibility of solid waste management to the Mumbai-based firm Antony Waste Handling Cell (AWHC), asking it to take up 100% solid waste management in the entire city through door-to-door waste collection. But there are allegations levelled that the firm has not reached 100% solid waste management and has not fixed proper time schedule for collecting the waste from door to door.

Some of the areas within MCC limits, like a spot near Venkataramana School in Kulai and others continue to battle garbage problem, with waste being thrown on roadsieds and dustbins continuing to be an eyesore despite the door-to-door collection system.

Speaking to daijiworld, Hanumanth Kamath of Nagarika Horata Samiti levelled allegations against Antony Waste Handling Cell and said, "Even though the company has completed six months since taking the tender to collect solid waste through door-to-door collection process, it has not reached its goal of disposing 100% solid waste. The company has to fix a time schedule to collect the solid waste from houses. When there is time variation in collecting the garbage from door to door, street dogs tear up the bundles of waste on the roads. Who is responsible for this? After the waste is scattered, the company workers do not carry it."

He also said that improper disposal of the solid waste will lead to spread of various communicable diseases in and around city.

It is also alleged that the agency is paid in terms of tonnes of garbage collected from the city, and to increase the weight of the garbage the company allegedly carries silt from the drains.

Responding to the allegations, Haridas, CEO of Antony Waste Handling Cell, told daijiworld, "As per the terms and conditions in the tender, we are doing our duty and collecting the waste from door to door by approaching the houses at the stipulated time. We have also installed GPS in hydraulic vehicles which carry the solid waste. This will help in tracing the movements of the vehicles."

He further said, "The staff members of AWHC are approaching the houses every day, unless they are hindered by an unavoidable circumstance."

Commenting on the allegation regarding collectiong of silt from the drains, he said, "We are collecting silt as per the tender agreements. MCC pays in terms of tonnage of garbage as per the agreement, even for works like sweeping and cleaning the drainage silt. The entire garbage is examined in the dump yard."

On allegation of sending the vehicles outside the city limits to collect garbage from Thumbe gram panchayat limits, he said, "On humanitarian grounds following requests from a former gram panchayat president, the vehicle was sent for a day to Thumbe where a heap of garbage was causing diseases like malaria and dengue. Moreover, the present gram panchayat president, PDO and the members also issued a press release that it was done on humanitarian grounds. People with vested interests are spreading rumours against the company. Moreover, bringing waste from Thumbe will not be feasible to the company."

Former mayor Mahabala Marla said, "The waste management system is effectively implemented in the city. People are happy with the system. Moreover, representatives, officers and people should involve in the effective implementation of collecting and disposing the garbage. Officers should track the progress."

Anthony is doing a commendable job but this is a huge problem and constant improvement by all stakeholders is needed. The local corporators have to work with the contractor in their localities in identifying and mitigating the problem . One main area of concern is the dump yard at Vamanjoor. I would like our MLA JR Lobo to be proactive in mitigating this. We have to pinch our noses when we pass to Pilikula which is a wonderful place which he can be credited with as administrator. Its time he contributes as a MLA.

Anthony waste management cell is doing a great job. 80% of the solid waste problems are solved.plastic bags, bottles, glass bottles, papers are collected seperately.
rest of the 20% job can be done by Hanumantha kamath itself. instead of complaining for every matter why dont you clean

The contractor is doing very good job. Wise decision by te MCC. On the discussion, the CEO told that the payment is not receiving regularly. This is unfortunate. When the fees for the waste management is collected from the citizen, why the MCC delaying payment. It must follow the tender conditions. AWHC should also instruct the waste collecting people to collect the garbages that have been pulled by the dogs and spread over road and other places. MCC should also put up a recycle management. How long can pachnady tolerate this.

A door to door garbage collection system has been introduced we should be grateful though we do pay the money for this service. Having said that, as citizens don't we have any responsibility towards the hygiene of the city? If we do, then why people carry their dirty garbage bags and throw on the roads. For eg. come to Bikernakatta and see the food and other perishable garbage thrown on the road ! I have witnessed some office goers bringing their dirty garbage and throwing on the road. When encountered, I was told to mind my own business. So, one can not blame the contractor fully for citizens' misbehavior.

Last 7 years regularly, I visit Urwa market to buy fish/vegetables.

Opposite to Urwa fish market, road leads to Urwa police station, at the corner of Urwa market the garbage used to pile up and stinks for days and some times even weeks.

After Antony Waste management has taken over to clean MCC area, this area is 90% ok, may not be 100%. They are doing much better job.

With all the limitations and the local peoples not bothered, non cooperative habit & culture, still Antony Waste management is doing better job.

Thanks to Ex MCC Mayor Mr. Marla, for his bold step in choosing Antony Waste Management in spite of opposition.

Instead of blaming, give them better suggestion how to improve the service.

Sadly, One of the filthiest places in India is Benares. One has to go and really see the surroundings. Mangalore is 100 times better.

Damodhar, I agree, infact most of the cities in UP , BIhar, MP and rotten and filthy.

The people living there are accustomed to living in between garbage and inhaling stench.

They have no idea of civic sense.

We need solid waste treatment plant in Mangalore, we cannot keep on dumping the waste in Vamanjoor area, MCC has to prioritize this first rather than fighting with officials

Previously when MCC was handling garbage in the city, whole of Mangalore looked like a stinking dump yard. Now, the things are better. Waste collecting team is regular and try their best to keep up the timing. In spite of door-collection there are some people who are more comfortable in throwing their waste on the roadside or beside somebody else's house. There is no remedy for such kind!

    @ KR Prabhu,

Am sad to see you always defending useless No.1 MP Nalin, in spite of my blaming MP and MLA in my comments.

I would also like to suggest you that you clean up your neighborhood first, stop spitting in the streets, and make India's No.1 Garbage Dump Bangalore into India's No.1 Garden City once again.

    Thanks.

Looking after the cleanliness in each ward is the prime duty of the respective corporators. Once elected these corporators starts behaving like Hifi people for 5 years and becomes busy just making money and taking high salary which they haven't seen in their life time with "make hay when the Sun shines" attitude!

Present system may not 100% result oriented. there is a particular the company vehicle comes to collect garbage by announcing 3 languages. that's good, but how any one can just wait with garbage at that same time. better the company provides special bin for 10houses or a small community so that any time these any one can dump garbage and once a day same company can collect it. it become easier for any working class with 100% result.

Plastic bags are banned in mangalore. The local authorities take salary and sit at home. if they work sincerely this issue can be solved easily.

Once it is banned means no one should be allowed to sell and use plastic bags.
