A Sharjah student recently won an international eco-hero award for her activities in environment protection and inspiring aothers to go nature-friendly.
Arushi Madan is the only winner from the UAE who is selected among 10 others from across the globe, to receive the 2015 International Young Eco-Hero Award constituted by the US-based non-profit organisation Action For Nature.
The organisation recognises and rewards children in the age group of 8 to 16 who are actively participating in solving the world's tough environmental problems. Each Eco-Hero Award winner receives a cash prize, a certificate and other benefits. Arushi will receive the award at a reception at the San Francisco State University in California on October 24.
A student of DPS-Sharjah, Arushi, 16, is known among her peers as the "Green Machine" because of her passion for the protection of environment.
Her mother Madhu Madan said Arushi takes every opportunity to spread awareness about the need to protect the environment and reduce waste. "She visits schools and shows environmental videos, games, holds quiz contests and Green Talk sessions. She campaigns at food courts, cafeterias and foot-traffic areas. She teaches students about the benefits of organic farming, has organised educational trips for youth to sustainable buildings and other "green" sites in the UAE, and has urged factory owners to go for recycling."
Spreading awareness with campaigns, events and workshops Arushi has given motivational presentations to educate women, labourers and children. "She plants trees and makes tables from recycled tyres."
She is the president of the youth community group "Students for the Earth" and is also an Environment Ambassador to the Middle East-with Tunza Eco Generation (a joint venture between Samsung Engineering and UNEP). Previously, Arushi received the "International Diana award" and "Sharjah Environment Awareness Award". She has also been featured as inspirational teen on www.inspiremykids.com.
