Mangalore, May 21: The Congress party has the onus of fighting the 'traditionalist' forces during the by-election to be held for Ullal assembly constituency, said Central Administrative reforms Commission chairman and former state chief minister M Veerappa Moily here on Sunday May 20.
Speaking after inaugurating the oath-taking ceremony of the party committee members, he said JDS had fielded its candidate not because it had faith in democracy but because of a false impression of gaining a victory over BJP by dividing the votes, but, however both would soon learn a lesson.
He advised the newly-appointed chairman of the committee to give power to his community through conducting constructive activities. The strength of Congress lay in how the party delivers its duties towards the society, but not how long it ruled the State.
He said the power of the party depended upon how promptly it responded to the miseries of the people belonging to lower class and the downtrodden. That is the first and foremost duty of the committee, he added.
Former minister B Ramanath Rai handed over the appointment letter to the new office-bearers, congress president Blasius M D’Souza presided over the ceremony.
