Margao, June 26 (IANS): I-League football club Salgaocar FC on Friday announced the signing of Scottish coach Malcolm "Malky" Thomson as its head coach for the upcoming season.
He replaces homegrown Derek Pereira who was at the helm since 2013 and guided them to a eighth place finish in last season's I-league.
Thomson has previously gained coaching experience with British clubs Celtic, Rangers, Blackpool FC, Birmingham City, Limerick, Dundee United and Inverness and Dubai-based club Al Ahli.
"I am looking to build on the great work that Salgaocar FC has done in the past. I am looking forward to coming over soon and adding value to the coaches, players and staff at the club. I have read and been told that Salgaocar FC is one of the most professional teams in India with a long history." the 48-year-old said in a club statement.
"I am really looking forward to the challenge. India is a developing football nation and it should be a very exciting challenge. I do know Darryl Duffy who is playing at Salgaocar FC and he has said only good things about the club."
Salgaocar FC general secretary Adlear D'Cruz welcomed the appointment saying: "We are delighted to have someone with Malky’s experience join us and we wish him a successful tenure at the club."
