Kuala Lumpur, June 17 (IANS): Asian Football Confederation (AFC) secretary general Alex Soosay has tendered his resignation with immediate effect, it was announced on Wednesday.
Soosay was suspended on May 13 by the AFC following allegations that he attempted to tamper or hide documents during a corruption probe in 2012, reports Xinhua.
Reports emerged recently that Soosay had attempted to "tamper or hide" documents during the 2012 internal audit which was triggered by claims of corrupt practices by the then president Mohamad Hammam, who was later banned for life by FIFA for corruption.
"The AFC would like to thank Dato' Alex Soosay for his commitment to Asian football during his extensive 20-year-long career at the AFC and wishes him all the best for his future career," an AFC statement said on Wednesday.
It said that AFC deputy secretary general Windsor John will be in-charge of the AFC General Secretariat until a new official is appointed.
