Beltangady, Jun 12: Fuelled by anger connected with political rivalry relating to the recent gram panchayat election, two gangs fought a pitched battle at Alakke in Tannirpanth village in the taluk on the night of Wednesday June 10.
It is said that friction was ignited by the simmering anger in the minds of some people against Hamid and Gafoor Rahiman, who had zealously campaigned during the gram panchayat election.
A person named Ismail later said in a complaint filed in Punjalakatte station that he was walking to the house of his aunt in Alakke when he saw a gathering of people at Alakke. 'I found that angry words were being exchanged by a crowd with Hamid and Rahiman. When I tried to pacify both the sides and strike a truce, a person named Adam struck my head with a soda bottle. Abubakker, Sameer, Shaukat Ali, Adam Kodange and Adam Alakke beat up Gafoor and Hameed,' he complained.
In a counter complaint, Adam said he was attacked by Ismail, Khalid Bovu, Ashraf Bovu, Hameed, Razack, Mustafa, Gafoor, Burak Razack Ashraf Kudradka and Rafique.
Punjalakatte police are investigating.
