Bhatkal, Jun 10: Bhatkal Municipal Council officials on Tuesday June 9 forcefully evacuated the traders who had illegally encroached upon  government land beside the national highway.  The operation is likely to continue for two more days.

Shops have been coming up one after the other for the last several months and have exceeded 100 in number.  Besides the residents of Bhatkal, people from other places also set up business on the encroached land.

Shops selling juice, footwear, and plastic products had sprung up all along the highway, shrinking the space. The traders were warned by the deputy commissioner but their indifference made the operation inevitable, said the officials.  The operation was held from Samshuddin Circle to Hotel City Lights.  The process of widening of the highways is also underway.

Council official Rafiq led the operation.  PSI Johnson and police who were present on the spot maintained security.
