Mangaluru, Jun 8: The process of fixing reservation criteria for the posts of presidents and vice presidents of gram panchayats (GP) which went to polls recently is being undertaken today. The election commission, which has set the ball rolling, has fixed time schedule for the completion of this process. In Dakshina Kannada district, this process is being undertaken between June 8 and 11.
The reservation formula is decided after considering the reservation criteria followed in the GPs since the year the concept of reservation came into being. At the time of deciding this reservation, which will be done in the presence of elected members, it will be ensured that the criteria does not get repeated in the next election.
After reviewing reservations fixed during previous elections i.e., 1993, 2000, 2005 and 2010, reservation for the 2015-2020 period would be decided upon. As per the new rules, the term of the president and vice president has been changed to five years instead of previous 12 months.
Reservation category pertaining to GPs falling within Mangaluru taluk will be undertaken at Netravati auditorium of Dakshina Kannada zilla panchayat at 9.30 am on June 8. Similar exercise for Bantwal taluk will be undertaken at Brahmashri Narayana Guru auditorium Bantwal at 9.30 am on June 9 for Bantwal taluk. On June 10, reservation criteria exercise will be held at Puttur townhall for Puttur taluk at 10 am. On the same day, reservation criteria of Sullia will be decided at KVG Townhall in Sullia at 3 pm. This exercise for Beltangady taluk will be undertaken at CVC Hall on Church Road Beltangady at 3 pm on June 11.
Dakshina Kannada district deputy commissioner, A B Ibrahim, has said that the new reservation list based on earlier criteria decided upon, has already been drawn up. On the basis of this list, reservations will be decided, duly taking care to ensure that the criteria do not get repeated in successive elections. For this purpose, GP members who have got elected should be present with their identity cards. No one other than the elected GP members can take part in this process, he clarified.
