Maggi tests in Karnataka show lead within permissible limits

Bengaluru, June 6 (IANS): The initial tests on the Maggi noodles' samples sent by the Karnataka government showed presence of lead content within the permissible limits, a food safety and standards official said here on Saturday.

The samples were sent to two laboratories.

"We received the reports. Lead, which is the main concern, is within the permissible limits. Nothing wrong, there is no issue there, said H. Shiva Kumar, joint director, food safety and standards, Karnataka, revealing the results of the seven samples analysed.

However, the results on Mono Sodium Glutamate (MSG) were yet to come.

"One more component is MSG. It requires more complex evaluation. That will take another two days, probably on Monday we are expecting that report," added Kumar.

Kumar said samples were being sent to two laboratories in Bengaluru from across the state for testing. "The labs are Robust Material Technology Pvt. Ltd. and PUDSUV, a South Asian laboratory with its main branch in Pune."

"So far, 26 Maggi samples have been sent for testing including the seven already tested. More Maggi samples are in line for tests from across Karnataka districts. Results for all these samples will be out on Monday," said Kumar.

Meanwhile, despite all the hullabaloo, the instant noodles are freely available at various places in Bengaluru city.

"Yesterday only we received an order from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). They (retailers) need to withdraw all the products related to Maggi. Otherwise, if it is found (retailing Maggi), they will definitely be booked under FSSAI Act," said Kumar.

He said Maggi is not banned in Karnataka but withdrawn until further orders.

"We have not used the word ban. There should not be any Maggi in the market until further orders," said Shiva Kumar, adding that steps were being taken to check unauthorised availability from Saturday.

The Karnataka government is also planning to send a notice to food giant Nestle, the maker of Maggi noodles.

"We are going to issue a notice to the company (Nestle). We are taking legal opinion," said Kumar.

He said the Maggi episode was over and now the concentration of the Karnataka government was on other brands and varieties of instant noodles.

    Mr. Mangalurian,
1st of all its not ayurbedic its Ayurvedic.
Coming to ur MSG comments. it is a plant derivative found in many of the vegetables and also in plant.
since the demand of this chemical (also know as Ajinamoto) is high labs started manufacturing it. this same synthetic Ajinomoto is supplied to 99% food manufacturers.
regarding ayurvedic medicines plz dont comment without proper knowledge. Rasa aushadis ie herbomineral drugs is a part of ayurveda in which herbs and minerals are used, minerals are purified in traditional methods mentioned in RASA shastra by which the toxic quality of it is removed and medicinal properties are increased. these drugs are time tested medicines are being used from thousands of years.
its 100% safe and also exact doses of all the medicines are mentioned in ayurveda.
so next time dont compare our genuine ayurveda tradition to silly thinks like Maggi

From a consumer's perspective, generally, there is an expectation that certain rules should apply uniformly across India.

But the constitutional/legal take is a little different. The central Government does not have the power to force its will on the states on many matters.

So, so far as I understand, the central government cannot force a state from selling certain items. The state may choose to continue selling those items.

The beef consumption/prohibition is a good example. The central Government's law may be enforced only on certain Union Territories, but not on states.

However, the central Government (or even an individual) can take a certain matter to the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court's ruling is generally accepted by the states regardless of whether they were party to a dispute.

First of all all government Labs, its outdated testing methods and its non competent personnel skills should be tested first and rating should be given. I think most of then will fail meet the minimum standards. If they qualify then they can test the quality of food items.
I think entire issue is started to extract money from political backed and appointed people.

With so many poor people starving all over India. I was just wondering if they could use the noodles and throw away the seasoning in the small packet.
Because MSG and lead was found in the seasoning not in the noodles.

Dear JK, tell the same to the central government who sent the advisory to all states to withdraw maggi from shelves. Why are you blaming Karnataka when they are just following the central advisory!?.

Mono Sodium Glutamate is a vegetable extract. It exists in common vegetables we eat all the time. Eating Mono Sodium Glutamate is not a problem at all. The limits imposed on food products are based on wrong assumptions by people who did not understand the make up of the substance.

And lead too exists in small quantities in the foods we eat. Especially fish.

So overall, the whole testing and banning is a huge fiasco.

If anything, Indians should be very careful in consuming the so-called Ayurbedic products as these at times contains very dangerous levels of metals.

    Mangalurian,

Indians take notice whenever MNC is involved. Its always feels nice to bash MNC while completely ignoring that many of the food items sold by the indian companies go scot free. The fact is that many people dont bother to do research of their own on the these things.

I strongly believe that the BJP government at center is behind this entire episode. It's a clever ploy to divert attention of people as they have been unable to fulfill any of the promises in their manifesto and now people are questioning!. They have totally failed in every area!. Let's see how long they can do this!
