Lisbon, June 3 (IANS): Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) president Fernando Gomes said on Wednesday that he and his colleagues are waiting "calmly" for the potential candidacy of former footballer Luis Figo for the FIFA presidency.
"Figo's possible candidacy for president of FIFA, for the new elections, is an individual decision, which falls entirely on Luis," Gomes said in a statement, reports Efe.
The official added that the FPF will wait "calmly" for Figo to decide with consideration for the overall interest of world football.
The legendary Portuguese footballer, who has played for both Spanish giants FC Barcelona and Real Madrid, decided last week to withdraw from the FIFA elections, which Sepp Blatter went on to win on Friday, on the grounds that the electoral process lacked transparency.
FIFA president Sepp Blatter resigned from his post on Tuesday following mounting pressure after a widespread corruption scandal rocked the governing body. His step down opened up the possibility of Figo again running for the top post.
Gomes reiterated that the FPF was "at the forefront" of defending "the termination of" the Swiss leader.
