Mangaluru, Jun 3: Officials of mines and geology department once again raided illegal quarries being operated in Arasule Padavu near Yekkar within Bajpe police station limits on Tuesday June 2. The raiding team comprised of deputy director, Ramappa, and another official, Nagendrappa.

Till now, these quarries have been raided for about six times, and over ten lac rupees have been levied as fine. Still, these quarries begin to function within a couple of days after the raids. There is about a thousand acres of government land in Arasulepadavu. Laterite stone quarries have been operational in both government and private land here in violation of norms. During the operation on Tuesday, five trucks loaded with stones, six cutting machines, and some other equipment were seized from the spot.

In the past, several locals had complained to the deputy commissioner of Dakshina Kannada district about the existence of illegal quarries. Under instructions from the district deputy commissioner, a team led by tahsildar had inspected the spot. Even though the people then told the tahsildar that the quarry operators had dug up PWD road and transformed it into a quarry, nothing was done in the matter, it is gathered.

Although raids have happened a number of times, the quarries continue to function without fear. The issue had been raised at the general session of the zilla panchayat too. It is being claimed that the quarries here have the support and backing of a minister.

As long as officials keep getting their palms greased with " Good Will " from Owners of these big time Quarries, raids will happen but no action will be taken. It is like " I pretend to catch you and book you for offense, you pretend that it has happened" !! But nothing concrete happens. We do not know who is the " Big Wig" behind these operations.! It must be some big fish in this society who is backing it other wise this quarry would have been closed long back.
Unless officials take stringent action against owner by seizing vehicles, equipment used and just levy a hefty penalty, nothing will change.
News about vehicles being seized is just an eye wash, within few days same vehicles will be found at the sight coz owner through some influential people would have bribed authorities and sorted out issue amicably. !!

Without a miniister, MP, MLA's support these quarry operators will not be able to operate. Mandatory punishment, followed by confiscation of equipments and vehicles should gazetted in the criminal law code. Expose the corrupt MLA, MP who are involved in illegal quarrying and ban them for life from contesting elections.

The sand mafia is fast developing to garner the FIRST PLACE amongst the five mafias of MANGALORE-namely Education Mafia, Land Mafia, Extortion Mafia, Arecanut transportation mafia and SAND MAFIA it is generally believed by every citizen of MANGALORE that the public representatives in active connivance of the various government department officials is actively pursuing the illegal excavation and transportation of sand from the river beds in the entire Mangalore District. It is firmly believed that the various ministers and public representatives through their cronies have earmarked vast tracts of river bed and land as their TERRITORY for illegal excavation and transportation. The illegal mining and transportation with OVERLOADING OF TRUCKs (20 tons in trucks with permits for 10 tons) is the precursor to a BIG SCAM waiting to be unearthed in the lines of the BELLARY IRON ORE MINING SCAM. We are helpless GOD SAVE MANGALORE AND MANGALOREANS.

Some where 10 people are living in one small house somewhere big 3 storey bungalow but only 2 elderly are living. demand is ter reason for all this. If there is no demand nobody will go for such illegal quarries.
