NGTTOA wants stricter action against illegal rent-a-car operators

Calangute, May 25 (TOI): The North Goa tourist taxi owners association (NGTTOA) has demanded that the RTO cancel the registration of cars being illegally operated by private rent-a-car operators if they are repeat offenders.

Speaking to TOI, Ravindra Vengurlekar, vice-president, NGTTOA, said that they had a review meeting with officials from the transport department, traffic police, Calangute police and other concerned authorities at the Calangute police station on Saturday, to discuss the situation following the crackdown on illegal private rent-a-car services.

Vengurlekar said that illegal private rental cars are only being detained and released after payment of a fine, even if the owners are repeat offenders. He said that repeat offenders need to have their car registrations cancelled as per provisions of section 192 of the Motor Vehicles Act, which the transport department has failed to do.

He said the matter is going to be discussed at the NGTTOA annual general body meeting on Tuesday at Calangute and they would also be meeting the chief minister in the first week of June to discuss their pending demand.
