Adil, Shiani enter quarters in junior tennis


Bengaluru, May 20 (IANS): Adil Kalyanpur and Shiani Manjanna, both of Karnataka, and top seeds in boys and girls singles, respectively, cruised into the quarterfinals of the SAT Open AITA National Series Under-16 Junior Tennis Championship here on Wednesday.

Adil, who won, a double crown in Hyderabad last week, defeated Gunjan Jhadav 6-2, 6-1 in the boys singles pre-quarter-final tie while Shivani outplayed teammate Ankita Nandakumar 6-1, 6-1.

The seventh seed, Sai Panav Ponaka of Karnatatka went down to Siddarth Thakaan 1-6, 3-6 while Nikita Reddy, who upset second seed Megh Patel in the second round, defeated Atharva Sharma 6-4, 4-6, 6-0 and entered the last eight.

Girls singles: Shivani Manjanna bt Ankita Nandakumar 6-1, 6-1; Nikita Reddy bt Ishwari Matere 6-4, 6-2; Lasya Patnaik bt Pratibha Prasad Narayna 6-2, 3-6, 7-6(3); S.B.
