Rio Pro postponed due to low swell

Rio de Janerio, May 12 (IANS): The opening day of the Rio Pro was called off on Monday due to a lack of swell at Barra da Tijuca beach, a media report said on Tuesday.

World Surf League (WSL) commissioner Kieren Perrow said competition was likely to begin on Tuesday with forecasts for bigger waves later in the week, Xinhua reported.

"Small conditions today but we anticipate the swell to fill in over the next few days," Perrow said in comments published on the WSL website.

"The banks look good so once we have some swell on them, we should see some great surfing. We'll be back tomorrow morning at 7 a.m. to reassess conditions."

Rio de Janeiro is the fourth stop on the WSL championship tour. Brazilian Adriano de Souza leads the men's rankings while Carissa Moore of Hawaii heads the women's competition.
