Process to identify new VC for GU begins

Panaji, May 6 (TNN): Goa University vice-chancellor Satish Shetye's eventful term in office is set to come to an end prematurely for in October 2015 he attains the age of 65 years- the maximum age for which an academic can serve in office as GU vice-chancellor as per regulations. The process has already been initiated to form a search committee which will recommend names for the VC's post.

Shetye was appointed as GU vice-chancellor after his retirement at 62 years as the director of National Institute of Oceanography.

The search committee that will recommend the names for the VC's post will consist of three members - one member each will be named to be part of the committee by the Goa University executive council, the state government and the university chancellor.

The Goa University executive council, in a meeting last week, has already provided its suggestion to be part of the search committee, a source said. After the state government and the chancellor too name their candidate for the committee, the search committee will meet and shortlist three academics who have the potential to serve as Goa University vice-chancellor.

The names will then be forwarded to the chancellor and the Goa governor, for selection of one of the candidates for appointment as Goa University vice-chancellor. The chancellor can ask for fresh names to be provided if she is not satisfied with the three recommendations.

Under the administration of Satish Shetye, Goa University took many great strides. GU's grading by the national assessment and accreditation council improved from B to A grade. Goa got its first autonomous institute in Chowgule College of Margao under Shetye and he also initiated the introduction of numerous new courses at the university and increased the number of postgraduate seats available at GU considerably.

GU also made a transition to online systems under Shetye's supervision, among other visionary moves.

In case of many state and central government universities, deserving academics are allowed to serve as vice-chancellors up to the age of 70, but as per GU norms the maximum age limit for the post is 65.
