Doha, May 5: Mangalore Cricket Club (MCC) Qatar conducted the first part of its 9th Annual Talent Competitions recently at the Skills Development Centre. The event witnessed enthusiastic community members from all age groups rushing to the venue to unleash their talents.
Enthusiasm was in the air as the young and old stood ready and excited to present their talents. The competitions lined up - cooking, Konkani speaking/elocution and dance competitions - witnessed fresh talents galore.
The evening began by invoking blessings with an opening prayer by Gina Lobo followed by the welcome note from president Norbert Corda and declared the 9th Annual Talent Competitions open. The programme was anchored by Dorothy Noronha and Ryan Renjarwho briefed the day’s events and the general rules of the competition. They then introduced the judges of cooking competitions Ivy Rosario, Juliet D’Souza and Joyce Pereira who were greeted with flowers by small kids.
There were 12 participants in cooking competition on the theme 'Mangalurean breakfast items' and a wonderful display of traditional breakfast items like Kailolyo, idiyo, bakri, mutli, panpole, appam, sajjigebajil, sheera, etc were very well presented in unique style.
Alongside, the Konkani speaking competition started with the introduction of judges Richard D’Souza and Henry D’Souza. This competition was organized to promote Konkani language among the children and it was good to see children speaking Konkani and making a good attempt.
Kids below 6 years had 'Show and tell' competition while 6-9 years had story telling in Konkani. Kids between 9-12 years were given the topic 'Parisaracha Sowrakshanath Muzho Pathr' while 12-18 years had the topic 'Yuvazanacher Adhuneek Madhyamacho Prabhav'. Adults participated enthusiasatically in the pick-and-speak competition where they had to speak on the topic given on the spot.
Finally the dance competition kicked off with the introduction of dance judges Celia D’Souza, Dimple Fernandes and Annette Venkat.
In the solo category of the dance competition there was no language bar but Konkani songs had bonus points. The choices of songs were feet tapping with good choreography and the performances were a treat to the eyes both by kids as well as adults. Adults’ performances really stole the limelight of the competition with superb performances. The audience appreciated their performances with non-stop cheering and whistles. Only group entries were missing due to the commitments of children in studies. As there were single entries in boys' category in their age groups, they had to compete with girls.
At the end of the competitions judges were asked to share their thoughts and to give their feedback. They said they were thankful for being able to witness the talents and appreciated the efforts put in by the participants and also by organizers in holding such competitions. They were all felicitated with mementos by vice-president Prakash Noronha, advisor Sunil D’Silva and public relations officer Vivian D’Souza.
Vote of thanks was proposed by Ryan Renjar, general secretary. Time keeping was managed by Jason Lobo, Vanessa Saldanha and Joyline D’Mello. Registration desk and draw of lots was handled by Winnie Saldanha, Della Rego and Mishal Lobo. The music system was handled by Naveen D’Souza.
