Udupi, Mar 21: Mahesh Bhat (27), co-convener of district Sri Ram Sene and president Muloor unit of Sri Ram Sene was assaulted by five unidentified men near Jarandaya Temple at Kaup near here on Tuesday March 20 night.
Mahesh is a rickshaw driver by profession and as usual he was at Muloor on Tuesday when an unidentified man hired his rickshaw to go to Belapu. As they went ahead in the rickshaw, Mahesh observed that two persons were following his rickshaw on a Pulsar bike. However, he continued for some more distance.
But when the rickshaw reached near Jarandaya Temple three more men with sabres in their hand stopped the rickshaw. Having sensed the danger, Mahesh jumped out of the rickshaw and started running in the fields. The unidentified men chased him. When Mahesh fell in the field they assaulted him. But before they could hit him with sabres, he managed to escape. However, he has sustained minor injuries in the attack.
He has now been admitted to district government hospital and is recovering. As soon as the news about the assault spread in the area, people gathered outside Kaup police station demanding the police to arrest the accused. Though tension prevailed in the area for sometime, people scattered soon after the police assured them of nabbing the accused at the earliest.
