Beltangady, Mar 20: It was only on Sunday March 18 that two students of IIIT-Bangalore had drowned at Kaup beach near Udupi had met watery grave while on a pleasure trip. A similar incident was also repeated from Mangalore where an engineer from Mysore drowned at famed Panambur beach.
Now within 24 hours another drowning case has been reported. This time it is from famous pilgrimage centre at Dharmasthala. Two pilgrims hailing from Dharwad district drowned in Netravati river near Dharmashala bathing ghat on Monday March 19.
The deceased have been identified as Suresh (20) and Manjappa (18), residents of Shivallinagar in Dharwad district. They had come to visit Shri Kshetra Manjunatha at Dharmasthala along with their families. After visiting the temple they had got into Netravati for bath. However, they could not read the whirlpool in the river and drowned.
Manjappa was first caught in whirlpool and immediately shouted for help. Hearing him shout for help Suresh went to rescue him. But he too was snatched by whirlpool. Though there were several persons along the bank of the bathing ghat, nobody could rescue them since it was dangerous to get into the water there.
Though police from Beltangady police station and Dharmasthala outpost came to the post immediately, they could trace the bodies of the drowned. Later fire brigade personnel too arrive from Beltangady. But they too did not succeed in tracing the bodies. It was only on Tuesday March 20 morning that their bodies were fished out from the river.
