Beltangady, Mar 17: Francisco Belil (60), father of the deceased Spanish research student Alberto Belil (26) arrived here on Friday March 16 and identified the clothes and other belongings of his son in the presence of the police.
Speaking to the reporters ASP Dr Harsha later said that Alberto was the son of Francisco Belil and Iris Spayer. He had a sister named Anne Belil. Franciso is an engineer in Siemens company. Iris passed away a few years ago. Alberto was a student of Barcelona University.
But he had a great interest in wildlife and research. This interest of his had taken him to various places in Europe, Turkey etc. Moreover, he had an unimaginable fascination towards India and about the wildlife of the country. Accordingly he had come to India on a tourist visa in January 2006. After travelling the length and breadth of the country, he had come to Beltangady. He had been to Bandaje near Kadirudyavara and established a tent there for his staying.
He was dependent on the villagers for his research and other works. But he used to pay them a good sum whenever they helped him in anyway. Even between his busy schedule he used to come to Beltangady and call his parents and friends back home in Spain. However, his last call was on June 17, 2006 to his friend and thereafter he never called home.
Having no clue about him for long his friend contacted the Spanish embassy which in turn alerted the Indian ambassy. The Dakshina Kannada police under the guidance of SP Dayananda began investigation and soon they got information about his stay in Bandaje. It was only a somedays ago, however, police came to know about his unnatural death in forest. As reported earlier the police have already arrested 8 persons in this regard and continuing investigation. Possibility of murder has been expressed by many.
