Mumbai, Mar 17: Rooftop made of galvanium steel, foliage on the walls, reduced visual clutter, flower pots, acrylic paint and circular seating, these are few of the things that will be incorporated in a bid to modernize Marine Lines and Charni Road station.
As part of the plans to spruce up stations to international standards, the Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC) along with Western and Central Railway will carry out the renovation of the suburban stations.
The aim is to have eco-friendly, aesthetic and futuristic stations, which will also seamlessly blend into the surroundings, in the near future.
MRVC has procured several designs for the stations from the National Institute of Design (NID) and they will soon zero in on one of the designs.
“We have selected Marine Lines and Charni Road stations initially for this plan, as they have already been done up by corporates. Hanging wires will be eliminated and cancerous asbestos sheets will also be replaced with galvanium metal sheets. The fencing around the station will also be changed and made in sync with the surroundings,” said MRVC managing director P C Sehgal.
According to the plans, signage would be put up on the columns and the space would be used prudently.
Renovation for each station will cost approximately Rs 1 crore, and work will be completed within a year. According to sources, corporate houses may also be invited in the station improvement plan.
