Mangalore, Mar 15: Call it a mind-block or a fierce fear psychosis gripping the citizens of Mangalore.

Whatever it might be the reason but it is the voiceless dogs in the city who are paying a heavy price for all that happened in Bangalore.

With not a single incident of dogs attacking human beings to the extreme extent, the city is witnessing culling of dogs in the most cruel and brutal manner..

A reliable source says; two dogs in Hat Hill, one in Bejai and four in Mannagudda area which were brought to Animal Care Trust died puking blood due to poisoning.

Many more had witnessed the Malabar Dog Catchers who were in the city to catch dogs, brutally handling the dogs.

“Do they deserved to be killed like this?” asks Animal Care Trust member and city based advocate Suma Ramesh who says that there have been cases of dog bites in the city. But Wenlock Hospital records clearly says that in many cases it is the domestic dogs that bite the patients not stray dogs. “It is misleading information disseminated to the public which has resulted in the gory scenario,” she adds.

Ever after the stray dog catching drive commenced ACT has been of the stand that the dogs must be sterilised and left back to the street, as the Dog Rule 2001 clearly states that the sterilised healthy dogs must be left back to the place where they were picked from.

But certain corporators have been making hue and cry about this and have been demanding that the dogs must be housed in ACT itself as people do not want the dogs to be back on streets.

“Rule is above all. The rule says that the dogs must be left back and we are bound to do so. ACT has a housing capacity of 90 dogs while we have housed 146 dogs right now,” Suma adds.

“Only way left is systematically conducting Animal Birth Control, not only for owner dogs but also for guardian dogs,” she says. With such gruesome instances happening to the ‘best friends’ of mankind, it is time for all animal lovers to say ‘no’ to cruelty against dogs so that they continue to remain as our best friends, she added.

In this regard Animal Care Trust has called for a public meeting of all compassionate people of Mangalore to join the movement to Save healthy street dogs from being killed by Mangalore City Corporation. The meet will be held on Thursday at SDM Law college auditorium between 4.30 pm to 5.30 pm.
