Mumbai, Apr 21: Having watched her ex-husbands movie Bombay Velvet, Kalki said that the movie was very moving and Ranbir's performance was incredible in it. Kalki's oen movie Margarita with a straw is being screened nationwide and garnering increasing numbers of footfalls, by the day along with praise for her spectacular work.
Based on Gyan Prakash's novel Mumbai Fables, the movie is set in the 1960s and tells the story of a boxer by the name Johnny Balraj and his lady love Rosie who is a jazz dancer played by Anushka Sharma. Kalki said, "I have seen the film too. I loved it.
It is a completely new way looking at Mumbai. It is the Mumbai of the 60s that's shown in the film so recreation of the city, Ranbir's performance is incredible, the songs, Anushka is playing a jazz singer in the movie... It was really moving. I enjoyed it,"
Recreating Mumbai as it was in the 60s was one mammoth task that has entailed the employment of 10,000 kilos of costumes, more than 200 vintage cars, 25,000 kilos of art material, guns from Germany and more than 600 crew members every single day. They actually built a part of the cuty from the ground with the road and buildings all around it. A lot of research too went into the making of the movie, with the makers looking into the then famous tabloid 'Glitz' which plays a major role in the story of Johnny Balraj.
They even went all the way in learning all about Russi Karanjia who edited the tabloid and ushered tabloid journalism into India.
So much so Manish Chaudhuri who plays Jimmy Mistry the editor of the Glitz magazine in the movie, met up with Russi's 80 year old tailor. He said, “He and his father made Russi’s suits. His anecdotes and pictures, along with the other research, were my references. I hope Russi’s family, friends and colleagues will enjoy Jimmy.”
Kalki has worked with Ranbir in the movie Yeh Jawaani Hai Dewani which had done pretty well at the box office. They had both played close friends in the movie. It is slated for release on the 15th of May.
