Munich, April 18 (IANS): German football club Bayern Munich has accepted the resignation of club doctor Hans-Wilhelm Mueller-Wohlfahrt with regret.
A day after the 72-year-old and his whole staff suddenly stepped down, the Bundesliga club confirmed the resignation on Friday, reports Xinhua.
Mueller-Wohlfahrt saw the bond of trust damaged as "the medical department inexplicably was blamed for the defeat" due to a long injury list after the Champions League quarterfinal first leg against Porto.
Bayern lost 1-3 and had to do it without Arjen Robben, Franck Ribery, Medhi Benatia, Javi Martinez, David Alaba and Bastian Schweinsteiger.
The German media assumes that the doctor and Bayern's chief executive Karl Heinz Rummenigge argued about the long injury list following the loss to Porto on Wednesday.
Nevertheless, Bayern Munich thanked the doctor, who was for 38 years, part of the German record champions.
"FC Bayern Munich took, with regret, note of the decision of club doctor Hans-Wilhelm Mueller-Wohlfahrt, to step down from all his medical activities for the club. Specifically doctor Mueller-Wohlfahrt but also his team have done an incredible job for the club and its players in recent years," said the club in a statement.
The Bavarians soon want to introduce a new club doctor. In the meantime Dr. Volker Braun will be in-charge.
