Mumbai, Apr 15: Kalki has already wowed international film juries and won Best Actress award at an International Film Festival for a movie yet to release in its country of origin. The Shonali Bose directed 'Margarita with a straw' has a trailer that captures the attention of the audiences and compels them to want to share Laila's journey. Similar to Priyanka Chopra's amazing performance of a autistic girl in Barfi, Kalki too gives an excellent rendering of a girl with cerebral palsy.
Telling the unusual tale of a girl with cerebral palsy who is able to understand her sexual desires but unable to comprehend why no one reciprocates. She tries her best to be everything that someone might desire in a partner and puts herself out there in search of someone who shares her dreams and desires.
Kalki, who recently separated from her director husband Anurag Kashyap said of her role in the movie, "I have played a lot of characters but this was a role, which was a shade difficult. Of all the members of the cast I was the one, who was least exposed to cerebral palsy. I didn’t meet anyone with cerebral palsy earlier. So, it took a lot for me to understand the character.
More than anything what this character demanded was to understand the psyche of such a person. The most difficult part of it was getting the physicality right because I was representing a section of people where the portrayal needed to be just perfect.
By the time I started shooting, I realised that normalcy is just a trend…a state of mind and none of us are normal. People with cerebral palsy are just like us, who have their desires, sexual urges and everything. We need to understand that they are just like us and need to be accepted."
Reportedly Shonali took inspiration from her cousin who has cerebral palsy and who once wished to have sex on her birthday. Shonali has narrated this heart-wrenching story with a rare grace and poise that makes the audiences truly wish for Laila to succeed in her quest for love.
