Udupi, Mar 4: At Kasturba Hospital, Manipal a new dressing technique, Limited Access Dressing or LAD (that has been designed and developed at Department of Plastic Surgery by Dr Pramod Kumar) is being practiced since year 2002. In this method, the wound is covered in a plastic bag and suction is applied from time to time.
In a press release, the hospital stated that by this method post traumatic wounds, Burn wounds, Diabetic ulcers, Venous Ulcers, Blast injury wounds, Pressure ulcers and wounds due to several other reasons are being treated successfully. Several other wounds that needed amputation were successfully treated using LAD in order to avoid amputation. LAD prevents further damage by infection in those wounds where arteries show significant blockage, very less blood supply and show relatively slow to no response.
At present more than 2500 Limited Access Dressings have been successfully done by Dr Pramod Kumar at the Department of Plastic Surgery of Kasturba Medical College and Hospital, Manipal. Dr Pramod has given 3 international and 4 national presentations on LAD.
Observing the success of LAD, Dr D P Saraswat, COO and MS, Kasturba Hospital, Manipal and Dr Parvathi Bhat Chief administrative Officer, TMA Pai Hospital, Udupi thought of extending this wound care facility to wider population by establishing a wound clinic at TMA Pai Hospital, Udupi.
Dr D P Saraswat pointed out “With this, the expertise of the Plastic Surgeons and operational standards of Kasturba Hospital is tested and proven to be equal to any of the best Plastic Surgery set up’s in India”.
