Mangalore, Mar 1: It was a long wait for in-charge minister for district B Nagaraj Shetty when he finally arrive two-and-half hours late for the Ullal regional convention of Karnataka State Tailors’ Association held here on Wednesday February 28.

Inaugurating the convention, zilla panchayat president Sushma Janardhan empathised with tailors and called for provision of social security to them.

Association secretary K S Anand demanded social security for tailors and threatened that the Association will stage a dharna in front of residences of chief minister, labour minister and deputy chief minister if their demand is not met in the annual budget.

The Association also demanded registration of tailors, setting up of welfare board, pension for retired tailors, financial assistance, provision of scholarships for their children, levy of tax on readymade garments and provision of Rs 25,000 towards marriage of daughters of the Association members.

A memorandum on the above demands was submitted to Shetty. Though all the dignitaries called upon the tailors to fight for their rights, only Shetty assured them of fulfilment of their demands.

Labour minister Iqbal Ansari who was supposed to attend the convention was absent on account of sickness.

Among those present taluk panchayat member Namitha Shyam, CPIM leader Ramachandra Uchil, KSTA president Lakshman S Ullal, KPCC member U T Khader and Yuva Janata DK president Farook Ullal.
