Goa Congress threatens FIR in Fabindia case

Panaji, April 5 (IANS): The Congress on Sunday threatened to file another FIR in the Fabindia case in Goa, accusing the ruling BJP and police of conspiring to take the pedal off the investigation.

Urfan Mulla, who heads the Mahila Congress in Goa, said the statement by Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar at the Bharatiya Janata Party national executive meeting in Bengaluru was intended to deter the investigation.

"How can the chief minister give such a statement when police investigation is on? If this goes on, the Congress will be forced to file its own First Information Report (FIR) against Fabindia and its top officials. We will do it for the security of thousands of women to shop in such stores where dubious CCTV installations are a threat," Mulla told reporters here.

"Before Smritiji, there are images of women of who used the room, but not whole (images). Seems like it was not intentional, probably unintentional," Parsekar told reporters in Bengaluru on Saturday.

Parsekar's statement came a day after Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani accused a Fabindia store in Goa of setting up a CCTV camera overlooking a trial room, where she was trying out some clothes.

Mulla said police interest in the case appeared to be tapering off.

"Despite being such a sensational case, police have allowed Fabindia top brass to take time to appear before investigating officers. They (Fabindia officials) need to be arrested to ensure that evidence is not tampered," Mulla said.

Fabindia issued a formal apology to Irani on Saturday but denied any wrongdoing on its part.

Four Fabindia staffers from the Goa store, who were arrested on Friday, were released on bail by a trial court on Saturday.
