Veteran sports journalists Pillay dead


Hyderabad, April 3 (IANS): Veteran sports journalist T. N. Pillay died here on Friday, after prolonged illness. He was 85.

Pillay was one of the earliest sports journalists from Hyderabad and was associated with English daily, Deccan Chronicle for nearly 60 years, serving as its sports editor till about five years ago.

Pillay, who gave break to many sports journalists, had also served as correspondent with Times of India and Filmfare.

Beginning his career in 1950s, he introduced racing reporting in the city and also played a key role in promotion of sports.

He was largely instrumental in formation of Andhra Pradesh women's cricket association and served as its secretary.

Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao has expressed his shock and grief over the demise of Pillay.

Rao, in his condolence message, said Pillay not only promoted young sports journalists but played a key role in formation of sports bodies.

The chief minister conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.

Pillay, who is survived by two sons, was cremated on Friday evening.
