Mangalore, Feb 27: At the Mangalore City Corporation Council meeting held on Tuesday, Feb 27, the opposition party members brought to light a Rs 1 crore scam in the city corporation.

Leader of the opposition M Shankar complained to the Mayor that a major misappropriation in the street lighting tender had taken place. The tender floated by the corporation was passed inspite of a stay by the High Court on the tender.

He also said that the council had approved the SBC electricity contract despite opposition from the council. The approving of the tender for about Rs 1 crore extra is a violation and thus the tender be withdrawn immediately.

The Mayor did not consider his complaint and said that the tender cannot be withdrawn once it has been accepted.

These words of the Mayor brought the members of the opposition to the well of the council and a chaos prevailed through out the meeting.

When the chief whip was reading the agenda, the women corporators stood around him protecting him from the unruly behaviour of the opposition members.

The nominated members as usual were found tearing the agenda copies. The meeting was then adjourned.
