Udupi, Feb 25: Former MP Vinaykumar Sorake and some workers of the Congress were arrested twice and released while they were protesting against the demolition of huts at Admar village, under Tenka Yermal Gram Panchayat, on Saturday, the police said.
The huts were built on a 4.5-acre land that had been reserved for the construction of a veterinary dispensary, an anganwadi, and a weekly market.
About two years ago, 45 families encroached the land and built huts. Only 13 of them were occupied now.
While the Udupi Taluk Panchayat had opposed clearing the encroachment, the zilla panchayat had cleared a proposal in this regard. Consequently, orders were given to clear the encroachments.
Superintendent of Police A S Rao told that the arrest and subsequent release of Sorake and other persons was a preventive measure.
