Goa speaker says governor ill, Raj Bhavan denies it

Panaji, March 24 (IANS): A day after Goa Governor Mridula Sinha stopped her address to the assembly midway and Speaker Rajendra Arlekar said Sinha had "health problems", Raj Bhavan on Tuesday said she was "perfectly well".

"While reading the text, due to excessive sweating and standing for a long time (50 minutes), she could not complete the last three paras of the speech," said a statement issued by Raj Bhavan.

On Monday, in course of her address to the assembly, Sinha sipped a lot of water and looked restless. She stopped her speech while making a point about cleanliness and the efforts by the Goa government to promote it.

Speaking to reporters after the governor's departure from the assembly complex, Speaker Rajendra Arlekar said that Sinha had "health problems", which forced her to stop her speech midway.

Raj Bhavan on Tuesday said that after her speech, Sinha discharged her engagements scheduled for the rest of the day.

"She met all those who were given appointments. As per her regular schedule, she also wrote two articles in Hindi - one yesterday (Monday) evening and another today (Tuesday) morning. This morning, she cleared two government files relating to assembly matters," the statement said.
