UAE, Mar 16: A record number of over 2,100 students from 26 universities and colleges from all over UAE participated in the 14th GMU Annual Sports Festival 2015, which concluded with a grand prize distribution ceremony at its campus in Ajman.
The festival was held under the patronage of Thumbay Moideen, founder president board of Governors of GMU.
Twenty Six colleges and universities from all over the UAE participated in the weeklong festival and vied for the top spots in Cricket, Football, Basketball, Badminton Volleyball, Table Tennis, Tennis, Throw ball, Squash and Swimming tournaments. Thumbay Group UAE was the Platinum Sponsor and KEF Holdings International, the Gold Sponsor for the festival.
The festival was held in collaboration with Body & Soul Health Club and Spa. The grand sports event is held each year keeping in view the philosophy of Gulf Medical University ‘Healthy Body for a Healthy Mind’ and to instill the spirit of sportsmanship and healthy competitive attitude among the students, stated Prof Ishtiyaq Ahmed Shaafie, chairman of GMU Sports Committee.
GMU Provost Prof Gita Ashok Raj was the chief guest at the prize distribution ceremony. Other guests during the colorful ceremony included deans and directors of constituent colleges of Gulf Medical University, Sports directors and officials from all participating institutions.
A total of 64 Trophies, 1,000 medals and 1,000 certificates were handed over to the winners and participants in various tournaments.
Sports representative from GMU presented a report during the concluding ceremony. He thanked the constant support, inspiration and guidance of the university president Thumbay Moideen and Provost Prof Gita Ashok Raj. “We have witnessed an increase, not only in terms of number of institutions and students but more importantly in the level of competition over the years. Gulf Medical University has always believed in inculcating sportsmanship enabling overall personality development amongst the students. We wish to thank our partnering institutions who have been participating in big numbers. This shows the popularity of GMU Sports Festival”, he said amidst loud cheers from the students.
