Row over Goa dropping Gandhi Jayanthi as a holiday: CM clarifies

Panaji, Mar 15 (PTI): Controversy erupted over scrapping by Goa government of Gandhi Jayanti on October 2 from the list of public holidays but Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar later said it could be an act of "mischief" or a "typing mistake".

Gandhi Jayanti, the birth anniversary of the Father of the Nation, was not marked as a holiday in the current year's calender, released yesterday, triggering strong reaction with Congress terming it as an "anti-national" act.

Interestingly, Gandhi Jayanti disappeared from the list of commercial and industrial holidays released on a day when the Mahatma's statue was unveiled in London.

Strongly opposing the BJP-ruled state's decision, senior Congress leader P C Chacko said, "BJP's mindset is a very sick mindset. ... Can any state government take a decision like this? This kind of decision they have taken is anti-national."

He said the central government "should immediately direct the state government to correct this. I am still in shock after hearing about this. No government in India has the right to do that. This is a very senseless decision which they have taken."

His party colleague and Congress spokesman Anand Sharma also said no state government can do it because it is a national holiday.

"They can't do it. Gandhi is the father of nation. Even last year children were asked to go to school on October 2," Sharma said.

RSS refused to be drawn into the controversy but said the number of holidays in the country should come down for improved work culture.

"I don't know the reasons for this decision. We will see why it happened. But, according to a survey, people in India hardly work for 150-155 days a year on account of holidays. Their number must come down for better work culture," RSS General Secretary Suresh Joshi said in Nagpur when asked about the Goa government's decision.

Seeking to douse the angry reactions, the Chief Minister said,"it could be a typing mistake. It is not an intentional mistake."

The Goa govt 'clarified' that the omission of Oct.2 holiday may have been the result of a printing error. But it made another mistake (appears to be deliberate one)by putting the date against Gandhi Jayanti as October 15 ! This news has appeared in today's leading newspapers.

Already there is a proposal before Central Govt as well as in some State Govts ruled by BJP to make Savarkar's birthday as Govt Holiday.
How many people know that Veer Savarkar was really a staunch Atheist ( Nastik) and he was not even believing in ShriRam and hence he would not have supported building of Ram Mandir in the birth place of Ram whom Savarkar never believed. Besides savarkar openly said that there is nothing wrong in Cow slaughter. So how about celebrating Veer Savarkar's birthday as Atheists Day or Rationalists day?

    Very good move.
Not only Bapu, all "jayanthi" as well as "punya thithi" in national level.
None of the Mahatma, Sadhu-Santha or Paigambar told not to work on their birth day / death day celebrate in bar & restaurant. Only 2 national holiday is enough. Mr. Prime Minister should, seriously work on this.

I wish it was not mischief but deliberate one and should be done at the national level. By declaring Holiday on Gandhi Jayanthi we are doing diservice to Gandhi who loved to work relentlessly. it is ironical instead of fighting against all that stood for like corruption, misuse of power, practicing caste-based politics all these years, we are fighting against not declaring Holiday on Gandhi Jayanthi.

Don't worry if your 'Gandhi Jayanti' holiday is cancelled, you may get compensated holiday on 'Godse Jayanti'. Also, as a bonus, you can witness 'FEKU's Monkey bath'.

Yes we can start by removing holidays for all religions starting with Hindu holidays later followed by holidays for the minorities.

Government should also not invent new holidays like 'Good governance day' or 'AB Vajpayee birthday' as a substitute for Christmas or other religious holidays.

Why can not we honor father of nation by working 16 hours?
Is holiday is the only way of honoring?
    Shame Shame....
Gandhi himself would have opposed for it...
    Congress never banned liquor....
    Congress never supported anti-corruption...
Honor Gandhi by his values... not by holidays...
