Bengaluru, Mar 11: The Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee is planning to write to the Centre to take action against Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Rudabhai Vala for showing "disrespect" to the National Anthem by walking off from the podium in Raj Bhavan during an official function on Tuesday even as it was being played.
Senior Congress leader and former Chairman of State Legislative Council Prof B K Chandrashekar said the Governor’s action was a serious breach of the constitutional norms and such disrespect to the national anthem could never be condoned or tolerated.
"We are thinking of writing to the Centre demanding action from the Narendra Modi Government against the Governor for walking off from the podium even as the national anthem was being played after he administered the oath of office toJustice Raghavendra Singh Chauhan as Judge of Karnataka High Court at Raj Bhavan on Tuesday," he said.
Speaking to reporters at the KPCC office on Wednesday, Prof Chandrashekar, said some leaders of the party had suggested that the issue should be brought to the notice of the Centre.
It is deeply disturbing that there was no word of explanation from the Governor’s office much less an apology on the issue, he said.
Prof Chandrashekar said unnecessary controversy was generated when Infosys chief mentor N R Narayana Murthy’s alleged remarks on national anthem during former President A P J Abdul Kalam’s visit to Infosys facility in Mysuru in 2007.
Murthy later apologised for playing the instrumental version of the anthem during the function.
"Why adopt double standards?," Prof Chandrashekar asked and said the Governor being a constitutional functionary was expected to set and adhere to higher standards.
