'Prabha saw attacker approach her, begged for mercy'

Sydney, Mar 10 (PTI): Bantwal-origin IT consultant Prabha Kumar, who was stabbed to death in a Sydney suburb, is believed to have seen her attacker approach and begged for mercy in her final moments, even as the police were investigating if the assault was related to the sex attacks here last year.

Prabha Arun Kumar, 41, was stabbed to death in Parramatta Park in Westmead while she was on the phone with her husband in India on Saturday.

Her husband Arun Kumar was yesterday interviewed by police over the content of that conversation.

Prabha's flatmate in Australia has spoken to Arunsince his arrival in the country, and told a local TV station what was said during the phone call.

"She saw he was approaching her and then he passed her and then suddenly she shouted 'don't hurt me, I'll do whatever you want', and then she said in her native tongue that 'he stabbed me, he stabbed me'," she said.

"And then (her husband) could not hear anything."

According to police, Prabha died after being slashed across the throat with a sharp-edged object.

The friend, on the condition of anonymity, also urged the public to inform police for any clues.

Police have launched a probe and were also investigating if a series of sex attacks in western Sydney last year could be linked to Prabha's death, reports said.

Homicide Squad chief Detective Superintendent Michael Willing was qouted as saying that the police were talking to Arun about his final phone call to his wife to piece together her movements.

He also confirmed other incidents in the area in recent months were being examined.

"I believe that over the preceding years there have been a number of incidents there (at the park)," Willing said.

"We would consider that as part of the investigation, and indeed you would expect us to look at anything that has occurred in that geographical area in the days and months leading up to this matter, and we will certainly do that," he said.

"What we're hoping to do is jog the memory of anyone who was in the area on Saturday night and we encourage them to come forward and speak to police," he added.

Police has released CCTV images of Kumar leaving Parramatta Station just before her death.

If you are telling there are so many problems in Australia, then why you have to stay there with all difficulties, just take the opportunity of this Ghar Vapsi and come back here, we welcome you here. Now, I am sure someone who is sitting in the US will ask “why Ashok hate India so much?? Let me answer beforehand. If I hate India, I should not be in this column. I love India and I act as the face of India abroad by living the standard that the society lives in. I want my children to say proudly that they are Indians and it will be easy for them (they have not even born in India) when India has the respect in the world as at least the 3rd biggest economy in the world, role model for religious tolerance, place where the intellectuals born. I know I am dreaming about that 3rd biggest economy because India is wasting its resources right now to find out that who pelt the stone to Church, who burnt the banned of VHP or who slaughters the cows. Unfortunate but true. Truth is always bitter but you can’t hide it.

In Australia most of the crime is influenced by drugs and alcohol whereas in India it is not. Australia is bigger than India in terms of Geography but have less than half of the population that India have making it more deserted areas. Prabha’s CCTV footage will teach a lesson to those Indians who have not visited Australia. At 9:30 evening, she was only one coming out of the station and it is well protected area. It tells that even at a well-protected area there is hardly people and people don’t come out at night and if they will use their own vehicle. So, the chances of crime is much more compared to India where there will be crowd and with the mobile phone there days each and every corner of India is like CCTV installed and crime should be less but irony is that the crime happens when people are watching. See that police kicking the women, people are watching it. See that video 2 girls fought in a bus with molesters, bus is full. Other foreigners saved that Israeli tourist from those picnic police but why other foreigners? Was it a place which prohibited to Indians? How many road accidents could have avoided if the drivers take acre and think of others life. Most of the accidents happen because of dangerous driving. People blame for bad roads, yes, I agree there are bad roads but what you do when the road is bad? Do you drive at 110km/hour in a country road because you drive that fast in a Motorway?? You have to drive carefully and have lots of patience when driving in bad roads and that’s how we should value for human life, irrespective of our profession. ..continued...

Talking about society, do you think Indian society is same as 50 years ago? Even societies like Japan where elderly are respected so much are changing. There is no Shravan Kumar in India now. Joint family is a history. Cost of living is so high that both partners have to work. Forget about raising 6-8 children that our grandparents managed, it is getting difficult to raise 2 children now for a common Indian couple.
You have seen in DW that a son killed his father because he could not take care of him alone or a police inspector been locked up in his own house from his wife and sons for money. It’s all changing in India too. Youngsters can’t sacrifice their life to look after their grandparents/parents. It is a sorry state but unfortunately it is happening in India and will continue in the name of development. People don’t want to work in their own field in villages and moving to urban areas to work as labours. Builders are buying that fertile land from the farmers and building concrete jungle. In WA, the government decided which one is residential land, which one is farm land and which one is commercial land and you can’t build commercial premises in other land.
When you go to the bank in India you perhaps don’t need to wait at all? You have a NRI account and the bank manager will invite you into his cabin and everything is done for you from the staff when you are just sitting and having a chat with him. What about common man? He will be just waiting for his turn. Compare that to Australia. Go to post office in India and the person in front of you will get few friends all of sudden and you have 5 people in front of you instead of 1. They know each other and they can just stay in the Q with their friend. Does that happen in Australia?
There are anti-social elements everywhere and no place is safe. What puzzles me is when India is so densely populated, have less drug and alcohol issues but crime happens in day light when people watching. continued...

I am sure you will go to a doctor or hospital someday as we all have to go. See the difference of attitude. It is where Anita talked about the value of life. I worked in Indian Hospitals where cardiac bypass is done for normal arteries because you don’t get money without surgery. I know gynaecologists who like to go for caesarean section even when know that can be a normal delivery if waited for another day. You don’t get much money from a normal delivery. I am sure since you are in Australia, you have seen that pedestrian died while crossing a red light and hit by a garbage truck. How remorse that truck driver who collapsed and could not believe what he did though experts said that accident could not have avoided looking at the road (corner) and the lady slipped and fell the road while crossing the road on a RED light. How many truck/bus drivers who knock so many 2/3 wheelers and pedestrians in India feel guilty? They just get next morning as if nothing happened. How many rapists you see defend their actions and blame the girl for rape in Australia? How many policemen kick /sexually harass women? How many policemen go for a picnic on duty?? Forget all these things what happens in India but let me come to that point you raised. You talked about domestic violence: Do you think no husband will beat his wife or parents beat children in India?? If you think so, you’re living in a different age. That happens in India but only the difference is in Australia wife and children know their rights and protest and complaint. If wife complaints with police in India you know what is going to happen to that women. You talked about sex abuse. You must have read that girls raped/sexually abused by their step fathers, uncles in India too but as I said before few comes out for same reason. Are you telling me there is drugs and alcohol use by Indians teens? There is but the society is different and as a result the numbers are less... continued...

This is reply to Charmaine: First of thanks for commenting about the social problems that Australia is facing. From your comment it looks like you’re just moved to Perth directly from India and never lived in other developed countries. I met a Gujju in Ireland when I moved from Singapore. He told me he is proud about India and so many things. We went for picnic and when he finished his beer bottle he, just tossed it to a bush and I noticed people around us whispering something (might be, this bloody Indians don’t have manners) I stood up and picked that bottle and tossed it the bin (obviously I lived in Singapore for 4 years and that changed my habit) I explained to him that it is not just being proud about India but you have to be the face of India abroad. People judge your country from your actions. The problem you highlighted is common in any developed country. The family structure is different than India in those countries. What you failed to read is between the lines of Anita’s comment. You are a teacher and I guess you choose this profession because you love children and teaching. Tell me honestly how many in India choose this teaching profession because they love children?

I know a family who moved from US to India and sent their child to school. At the age of 7 he made a list of reasons that why children should not go to schools in India. Few points he made at the age of 7 are: Teachers don’t love, they beat, they do partiality and children steal. I studied in India and I can tell you I had so many teachers who did this partiality and beat innocent children for no reason. How many of your colleagues in Australia choose that job because it pays. How much racism you’re experiencing in your work place as claimed by lot of Indians who never been to Australia. How many nurses and doctors you have seen in India who chooses the profession because they are kind and passionate to care for sick? Compare that to Australia. Continued...

Ad, I have a very simple philosophy. If you are living abroad and complaining about that country, then just get out of there. If someone is claiming Australia is racist, why do you go there in first place?? You cant complaint for anything once you're there. It is you who decided to go there. How do you expect we in India loose sleep over that "your sister is killed and you cant protest" thing of you. Did anyone asked you to go there?? We have to take responsibility to our deeds and outcome.

    Dear Anitha,
We are all living in a world filled with evil and crime. If Australia has respect for human life then why is there rise in domestic violence, sex abuse, rape, broken families, foster care, teenage girls victim of self harm because of sexual abuse by their step fathers, teen alcoholics and drug addicts. I see these cases daily because I work as a teacher in Australia and feel sorry for young kids living here. So where is the respect?? It's sad a young life is lost. domestic violence, sex abuse, rape needs to report and I bet, laws are far better in Australia than our beloved india. Broken families because when both the couples work & earn enough, conflicts arises, Foster Care is a nice thing at least there is some one to the kids, which we lack in India. Sexual abuse by their step fathers will be dealt every seriously in Australia if reported (I am sure white kids are bold enough to drag their parents to court) Teens alcoholics and drug addicts its Teens choice, there are rehabs and Indian teens are not any better anyways.

Murders take place every where in the world. We have so many examples in our own Mangalore, that too main Hampanakatta area at broad day light. For that matter in Australia it is not advisable to move or walk in some secluded areas like park and some streets even in main Sydney city. After 6 in the evening some places are deserted. Most of the shops are closed by 7 PM and public do not like to move on roads. Some airports do not allow night flights as well. Parramatta is a suburb of Sydney and hence few people in these areas. There are warnings too put up not to move alone in certain areas.
The attacker may be maniac but he has taken the advantage of the locality.
