Washington, March 7 (IANS): US lawmakers wished people across the world a happy and colourful Holi.

Several lawmakers, including the lone Indian American and the first Hindu-American members of the house, Ami Bera and Tulsi Gabbard, have wished people on the occasion of Holi on Friday.

"I wish all communities and families, celebrating the festival of colours, a very happy Holi!" said Judy Chu, chairperson of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC).

"As we mark the end of winter, let us joyously welcome the renewal of spring with friends, music, and colour, may the season brings love, happiness, and peace to you and your loved ones," she said in a statement.

"I wish everyone in Sacramento and across the world a safe and happy Holi. May this Holi celebrations welcome a prosperous and colourful spring for all communities," said Bera.

"Holi is a time to celebrate renewal and strengthening of community and family bonds. Since ancient times this festival of colours has commemorated divine pastimes, such as when Lord Krishna played Holi with his associates and devotees," said Gabbard.

"I celebrate Holi along with millions of Hindus in the US and around the world. I wish all a very happy Holi!" she said.

Other lawmakers, who joined in wishing "happy Holi to everyone around the world", were CAPAC chair emeritus Mike Honda, CAPAC whip Mark Takano, Barbara Lee, Ted Lieu and Bonnie Watson Coleman.

Founded in 1994, CAPAC is comprised of members of Congress of Asian and Pacific Islander descent and members who have a strong dedication to promote the well-being of the community.
