Washington, March 6 (IANS): Eighteen times Olympic champion Michael Phelps may be given a chance to compete at the World Championships this summer in Russia after his six-month ban from competition ends in April.
USA Swimming is considering if Phelps can be allowed to participate in the meet, reports Xinhua.
"It's complicated but there are ways in which it could happen. There's a pathway for things to be reconsidered or considered," USA Swimming executive director Chuck Wielgus said.
Phelps was arrested in 2014 for driving under the influence of alcohol, leading him to receive a one-year suspended sentence and 18 months probation. He was ordered to attend an addiction treatment centre and USA Swimming also banned him from attending the global championships in Kazan, Russia, from August 2-9.
The 22-time Olympic medallist apologised and promised to make amends.
