Arrest of Shriram for hate messages - A lesson for online abusers

Mangalore, Mar 5 : The prompt arrest of Shriram Yadapaditthaya for posting hate messages against a partcular religion on Facebook has opened up a heated debate among netizens, especially in social networking sites.

Shriram, a techie from Shivamogga staying in Bengaluru, was arrested after a complaint was filed against him for making derogatory comments against Christianity on Daijiworld's Facebook page.

The incident should serve as an eye-opener for online users. Quite a few people have taken freedom of speech, especially on social media, for granted, many have gotten away due to lack of evidence, and lack of courage in filing complaints, or delay in doing so.

Daijiworld's Facebook page has about 80,000 followers from all around the world and dozens of news links from the website are posted every day. The moderators do not discriminate on religion or subject when posting the news links. Over the years we have faced a huge number of abuses from various corners, and do so even now. The best thing we have done is to simply ignore and not react at all, and move on with our mission of providing unbiased news. We welcome constructive criticism and use it to make ourselves better, and when we go wrong, we take a lesson from it and rectify our errors.

But this time, filthy language used by Facebook user Shriram inflicted pain on a section of the community, and the matter assumed serious proportions. Though we were quick to delete some of the comments from the page as soon as we received complaints from readers and Facebook users, the comments were already seen by many, and screenshots began to be widely circulated through WhatsApp and other social media.

I have personally been one of the biggest victims of online abuse ever since daijiworld.com was incorporated. I have experienced every kind of abusive language, and quite a few times, reacted too with anger. But over the years, I have learnt to take these abuses in my stride and not to react spontaneously. Not only online, abuses have come my way over the phone and even face-to-face. It is not so easy to be mute all the time, for after all, we are humans and have our moments of weakness.

There is always a difference in ideologies, which is evident from discussions related to politics. But when it comes to religion or an individual, one has to be very careful in selecting the words while conveying the message.

Religion has been the most sensitive issue in current journalism, and any hate message against any particular community has become difficult to bear with, as there are several groups spread over in each religion. Most of the time, personal abuse hurts a lot. There has been much debate over free speech these days, but one needs to remember that while healthy debates are always welcome, using cuss words and abusive language is totally unacceptable on open platforms that are easily accessible to children.

It was perhaps very easy for anyone to send out hate messages until the IT Act came into existence. Under the IT Act, not only the users, even online publications like us are liable for posting abusive or hate comments. And yes, we have faced such situations a few times in the past, and are fighting a legal battle even now.

If you think that sending emails or posting malicious comments on websites under a false name is safer, you are wrong. Today the technology can trace you anywhere, and no matter under what name you send comments, you can be tracked to the very device you used for it.

Those who find pleasure in sending abusive messages through various platforms and devices, please take note. The arrest of Shriram is an ample example of how our authorities and law can catch you in no time.

One must salute S Murugan, the police commissioner of Mangaluru city for taking serious note of the case and arresting the accused in less than 48 hours.

Since Shriram has publicly apologised in his Facebook post for his misadventurous hate messages, one may assume that he has realized his mistake. Of course, law will take its own course, but I suggest, let us forgive him and treat this incident as a lesson for those who enjoy abusing others online, on phone or face-to-face.

Here's a small revelation: During investigation into Shriram's case, we were told by the authorities not to delete comments from Facebook the next time such an incident occurs, no matter how abusive the comments may be. We were instead told to save copies of the abusive comments as evidence for future use. Hence, please think twice when you post comments both on Facebook and on our website, because if need arises, we will be obliged to cooperate with the police.

This is a special request to the readers of Daijiworld.com - please be careful while selecting your words when posting comments to articles. A number of comments go unpublished due to abusive words and personal attacks on others, but please remember that you would be writing abusive comments at your own risk. Let us keep this space clean, open and comfortable for all. If anyone finds abusive content in the published comments, please notify us with 'Report abuse' option, and help us keep this platform clean.

Great timely warning. Journalism must be without fear or partiality.
Likewise, every comment must keep certain standard of decency and respect towards the opponents.

While touching the subject of religion, the commentators get too irresponsible and flagrant at times. Show true religion while touching that subject.

I was greatly blessed through writing comments at the Daijiworld for a very long time. The daijiworld is doing a great job in journalism. As I am getting old, may I request your prayers for the energy and concentration to write comments as usual.

Great job and a great lesson.

What i do not understand is there have been so much of hate comments in the past on the website that has been kept. I've been surprised at times with the lack of moderation in those comments. There has been attacks against political parties, religion, caste etc. I hope this is a lesson for you as well Daiji. Hope to see more peaceful comments going forward.

@ vellano1, & ER: Owaisi should be questioned and tried for his comments.. What about Togadias, the sadhvi`s, the Mohan Bhagawats?? do you condemn what they have said?? why the hypocrisy... No sane human being will support any cruelty to a fellow human being irrespective of the religion, caste or color.. The question is are the ones who support and endorse such cruelty are sane? how much anger and grouse should they be holding and for what? Would these people who spit venom in the society do the same if they themselves or their loved ones are at the receiving end? During the moral policing that is endorsed by the right wing there was a complete lack of humanity. Would they do the same to their own kids? abuse, slap and hit them in public? who gave us these rights or are we saying that this too is a right of expression?

    Dear Mr Shankar
Firstly as educated ppl v should understand difference between freedom of speech and abusive speech particularly when targeting any religion. We respect our constitution so without making any todfod or without creating any violence we went straight to the police peacefully and less than 48 hours we got justice. In Mumbai when PK was released some people went n stoned theaters, created all sorts of violence. When police and law exists who r v to take law in our hands. We should respect our constitution particularly on sensitive issues like Religion.

Thank you Walter sir & Daijiworld team for the good work.

Preachers of tolerance and forgiveness could well have responded on the same platform and demanded an apology and warn him of the consequences otherwise. Could also have met him personally and seeked an apology.
Oh, then you wouldn't have the pleasure of victory for putting a boy behind bars.

Keepers of the religion, what have you done against Mohan Bhagvat? Have you done anything against Balika girl? What have you done against Dan Brown? He was roaming in India recently. Do you know how many abusive books like " The Holy grail" are being sold in India?

My simple question is "Is one's faith on God so fragile that if someone abuses, it will shatter?"

"Preaching forgiveness is only for weekends, not weekdays"
    - Preaching and practicing forgiveness and true repentance must be done frequently.
    - Forgiving someone does not mean the person who was forgiven can keep repeating the same action over and over again. This means the person who was forgiven has not repented !
    - If we do not truly reconcile with one another, we cannot reconcile with God. Jesus Christ knows who has truly repented and who seeks true forgiveness.

May be the commentator does not know that people have complained against them as well. However, the difference is that people like bhagwat and balika have openly given speeches and if the society (including individuals like you) believes in the rule of law and decency, then the society should take action. There is no need for any particular person to complain. Also, the fiction and hate speech are different things altogether. JHust check what this guy posted in his facebook, it is a threat to people which falls under criminal code. Writing a book on some topics is not a threat to anybody though it can offend people's sensitivities. Freedom of speech is the freedom to discuss topics that could offend, but not to threaten violence against any person or group.

    Yours future is Brighter.
    Keep it up cool Character.

I suggest a way out for Shriram Yadapaditthaya.

In the daijiworld almost commentators have forgiven him for his heinous abuse to Christians and Christianity except a few.
There is no any law in this world ones both the parties compromise each other and take back the complaint to rest the case.
Let him use the opportunity what Jesus said:
I quote. Matthew 5:25 Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison. Unquote.
Let Shriram and some reliably responsible persons take an appointment and ask forgiveness from bishop along with some other church elders or pastors and those who have complained on behalf of Christian community. Hope they may forgive you and take back the complaint.

Any way he was a provoked person.

Over the years reading comments in daijiworld one thing surprises me is that any incident occurred any where in the world boils down to only two things Politics and religion. Why Mangaloreans for that matter many of the commentators fail to see the incident as independent accident not connected to any religion or party. Why the comments end up in abuse and hate? Do we gain anything? What we must see is that how it is affecting the society as a whole and not to a religion. It is right that we criticise but make positive criticism do not jump into stereotyping anyone. Why we have to find identity only in religion or in a party? Can we not stand as an individual. I dont think that would be problem. One thing is for sure by abusing anyone nothing is gained but abuse in the end.

Timely article by the Daijiworld editor.

While communication system is so advanced, it’s abuse is also increased drastically. Rather than utilizing in a civilized manner, many educated people also misuse them. Social media sites were used send/receive all sorts of message, where most of them would cause damage in one way or other. Some may pass the message to many as if they themselves witnessed it, but without knowing the actual fact, and without realizing the extent of damage they would make. Filthy language, derogatory statements would damage the young minds and instigate hatred to other community for no reason. However, sadly some justify their wrong doings just because of their standard of living, society where live in, culture, community and so on… Freedom of expression or freedom of speech does not necessarily mean one can say/write anything and everything. Sometime damages done can not be corrected. Repent will not work here.

Readers to note that, just by clicking ‘yes’ to the abusive and insulting statements, you are not only supporting their act, but you also inviting trouble for yourself when he was caught / charged with any case. Also you are encouraging and provoking others to react in wrong manner.

Let us use these social media in a sensible manner… think twice before you post it…

Whatever ideological, political, religious difference and beliefs what we may have, but I believe Mangaloreans are not that hostile to each other as they sound here in reality. In a heat of debate we have our weakness's of not thinking before inking, but I hope in society we are not like that.

The current young generation is little bit aggressive not as tolerant as we were when we grew up in teenage days. Our parents and grandparents were more tolerant than us also communal tension was not even relevant then. During Babri Masjid incident I remember in school we were talking about Hindu muslim riots, but I never remember any word of Temple or a mosque in the mouth of any regular muslim elders who used to come to visit our house in village for their evening chit chat with my grandfather and other neighbors. In my place back home, even now I still see elders still having the same bond with people from all community, for example in the markets, Hindu or a Muslim or a Christian, visiting each other, gossiping over a tea, having fun doing regular things. They do talk about politics , they support different political party, but that does not bother their regular routine or there is a heated argument or uncontrollable situation. However I do not see the same bonding in their children of this generation, most of them have ego issues that I belong to this religion or ruling party, that party this party, am superior for some matter, I have better contacts and in control in the area etc. However worried little bit for current and future. We hope elders, religious leaders of all community come together to council such youths and make a society healthy to live in irrespective of political or religious differences.

Dear Sir, Very genuine advice. It was the need of the hour.

Here, Shriram is not important but the quick action from S Murugan, The Police Commissioner, surely will serve as a strong deterrence for the future.

By our practice, hopefully almost all members of the particular community might have forgiven Mr. Shriram he deserves it, first time offender.

"Just as every one has freedom of religion same way everybody as freedom to express their opinion"
    - Zeitgeist, as an Atheist, can you tell us who decides 'Christians should be slaughtered' is an expression or a rallying cry?

"In a history of humankind opinion has not killed anybody but i cant say same thing of religion"
    - A lie repeatedly told does not make it true
    - The biggest threat that is destroying modern society is Relativism where there is no absolute truth and no one's opinion is 'right' or 'wrong' !

The incident should serve as an eye opener for everyone in the fast paced society, where venting out spontaneous emotions has become an activity of the day, without waiting to reflect whether it is a reaction triggered by anger or a reflection of a reasonable mind. In the era where Social networking has become an absolute necessity and indulgence for many , a confused notion and indication prevails as 'where to draw the line'?.

The editorial amply explains our collective responsibility towards society and peaceful coexistence even in the digital space, while explaining the ethos of DW. This should definitely serve to build an understanding as not to use this space for a hot headed debate in gladiatorial arena where proving one's point becomes an absolute means of self expression, rather to be sensible not to react but to act.

A timely article by the Editor.

Arrest of Sriram for posting his views on a facebook page has revealed the hypocrisy we face with everyday !
The Hypocrisy of all those who extended extensive support to Charlie Hebdo when they published the cartoon and when they were attacked. The arrest also unmasked the hypocrites who hailed the movie PK and asked for a ban for Davinci Code.
I am in least support of the views expressed by Sriram but strongly support his right to express.

Daijiworld assisting the police with necessary proofs, shows the high standards of abiding the law. I appreciate that.

But Sir Walter, having seen you with great respect for unbiased reports, making all mangaloreans proud around the world by gifting us Daijiworld, I expected you to make one word condemning this incident of complaint/arrest. You missed that i guess.
If this trend continues, the high standards of 'freedom of expression ' in India , which the whole world applauds is at risk.

Shankar freedom of expression does not give you the right to abuse any religion or person.
What is the use of freedom of expression if it is going to provoke unrest in society.
You are talking about PK what about the umpteen times where Christians are shown as drunkards/of loose character?

If the reader doesn't like it, ignore it. If you want to object it use the same platform. Do not avenge by filing cases just you did not like his views.

    @Shankar, Mangalore

"But I support and endorse his right to express."
    - Is saying 'Christians should be slaughtered', an expression of feelings or something else?
    - If the boy said "The PM or Sadhu or wife should be slaughtered", would you still be championing his right to express?
    - These are the words of a person filled with hate. We need to pray to God to change the heart of this boy (i.e. Shriram Yedapaditthaya).

"If the reader doesn't like it, ignore it. If you want to object it use the same platform."
    - In other words, you want to pull Christians to the same lower standards of this misguided boy.
    - Why didn't his own community object to his comment? Do they care about this boy? Do they care about this boy's eternal salvation?

"Do not avenge by filing cases just you did not like his views."
    - The Hindu understanding of avenge is not the Christian understanding of avenge. Read the Bible.
    - It is out of love of Christ for this boy, the Christians have filed a case. What if this boy and others inspired by his bravado uttered something like this at work or home? Would the office people or family members ignore it?
    - Has his own family reprimanded him? Why not?

A timely and very good article, there are some paid online commentators whose job is only to comment against other religions. Now a days the religion has become a product. Line a product, they try to show that our religion is better than any other... when they fail to attract, they try other way, like abuse and spread fake news on other religions. This is not only a online tussle , you can see those celebrations of unity and “utsava” where instead of talking about the good elements of their religion and convert the youth in to a god fearing and kind human , they only keep abusing the rest. They bring in expert abusers from other states. But again it’s an open secret that these groups are there to market a particular political party, they get hefty money to fetch votes for them.

Let police to do some thing on this issue. If we not teach lesson, how this culprits get know what is the effects of abusing any other religions and communities. India Named as “Hindustan” But indian constitution will not tell any one only hindus have to leave here. All religion or caste people can live here in india and they can spread their religion values.

very well written Mr. Walter. While some people argue in the lines of free speech, it doesn't mean that anyone can abuse any religion or person thinking that he or she can get away with the ruse of freedom of speech.
All should have control over emotions and not show their online machoism. Let us be courteous to all irrespective of religion or colour .
Mr. Shriram seems to have carried away with his emotions as he has done it many times earlier, which can be seen on google search. Hope he and all of us have learnt a lesson today on our limits of decency or indecency.

Indeed many a time it is difficult to suppress our opinion, specially when sensitive subjects on religion or our National commitment is questioned. Many a time we have half baked people spewing venom on certain communities as if they are the conscience keepers of this nation / world. Every one has their own opinion - may be right or wrong - but none has the right to run down others. Keep up the good work Daijji .. you are one of the finest news portals this part of the world.
