Mangaluru, Mar 3: The city crime branch (CCB) police have arrested five persons in connection with the recent group clashes at KC Road near Talapady, and seized six petrol bombs from them.
The arrested are Abdul Sattar (33), a resident of KC Road, Niyaz (30) of Guddemane, KC Road, Abdul Nasir (28) who resides near Talapady bus stand, Shabbir, a resident of KC Nagar, and Mohammed Basheer (36), a resident near Talapady Pilikur mosque.
Among the accused, Nasir is an engineer.
The clashes eruped on the night of February 25 after dispute arose between two groups over putting up banners and buntings in preparation for Talapady temple's Brahma Kalashotsava at KC Road junction. One of the group allegedly switched off the street lights and started pelting stones and soda bottles. The other group retaliated and in the ensuing clashes, several were injured. After this incident, 13 shops were burnt in Thokkottu.
It was not just the KC Road clashes. As days neared for the Virat Hindu Samajotsava, sporadic incidents of stone-pelting, defacing of banners and shop fires were reported. Hence, based on credible information, the CCB police arrested the prime accused and recovered six petrol bombs from them.
The police had ear arrested two persons in connection with the KC Road clashes.
Meanwhile, Ullal MLA and health minister U T Khadar said that when anti-social elements try to disrupt peace, the public should inform the police. He congratulated the police for taking quick action and arresting the accused. "The people should help the police in bringing such anti-social elements to book. In future too the police department should take stringent steps to control such anti-social forces," he said.
