Mangaluru, Mar 2: Members of a right-wing outfit on Monday March 2 waylaid a truck allegedly transporting rice illegally near Maroli here and handed it over to the police.
The outfit alleged that the truck was transporting rice without any valid documents like bill for the rice load.
It is said on receiving information about the alleged illegality, the outfit members had kept a watch on the government-run godown at Maroli and on Monday, waylaid the truck soon after it from the godown.
The driver of the truck allegedly offered Rs 25,000 to the actvists, and they refused, he hiked the amount to Rs 50,000 and still they rejected, sources said.
They then handed over the driver as well as the truck to Kadri police.
The police took the truck to the police station and on inspection, found 60 bags of rice in it.
However, whether the rice was being transported legally or illegally would be known only after inspection by officers of food and civil supplies department, who arrived at the police station later.
The driver has been detained. It is learnt that the rice was being transported to Bantwal, and the driver is also from the same place.
