Ajax beat PSV 3-1 to close the gap in Dutch football leage

Eindhoven, March 2 (IANS): AFC Ajax narrowed the gap with Dutch football league leaders PSV Eindhoven to 11 points after a 3-1 win at the Philips Stadion here.

PSV were the better team in the first half hour of the match on Sunday. But Ajax opened the scoring. Ricardo Kishna tipped in a cross by Anwar El Ghazi, reports Xinhua.

PSV created some opportunities in the second half, but only found the net 13 minutes from time. Luuk de Jong headed in a cross by left-back Jetro Willems.

A few minutes before the goal Ajax substitute Lasse Schone hit the cross-bar with a free-kick. But a few minutes after PSV's equaliser he did hit the target with a deflected free-kick.

Anwar El Ghazi secured Ajax's victory in injury-time. He finished a fine action with a curled shot into the net.

Thanks to the win second placed Ajax closed the gap with leaders PSV to 11 points, with nine rounds remaining.

"Still I don't think it is realistic to think about the title," Ajax coach Frank de Boer said afterwards.

PSV coach Phillip Cocu agreed: "We shouldn't give this away."

AZ Alkmaar, who beat Willem II 2-0 on Saturday, and Feyenoord Rotterdam, who drew 0-0 against FC Utrecht on Sunday, are third and fourth.
