Mangaluru: Finally, auto rickshaw minimum fare fixed at Rs 23

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (DV)

Mangaluru, Feb 28: After days of stand-off between the district administration and the auto rickshaw drivers over the issue of auto fares, the minimum fare has finally been fixed at Rs 23, which is what the auto drivers had been demanding.

As per an order issued by the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) the new fares will come into effect from Sunday March 1.

Also, every kilometre after the first 1.5 kilometre will be charged at Rs 13 (maximum three passengers).

Waiting charge - first 15 minutes free, and 25 percent of the metre charge for next 45 minutes of waiting.

Luggage charge - 20 kg free, and Rs 2 for every extra kg or in part.

Night charge - Auto drivers can demand 1.5 times the above charges between 10 pm and 5 am.

All auto drivers have been directed to display the revised charges prominently on their vehicles behind the driver's seat, along with the driver's permit attached with photograph and mobile phone number.

Also, the RTA has ordered all auto drivers to install digital metres compulsorily.

It may be recalled that in the beginning of January, the DC had ordered revised the auto fares and reduced the minimum charge from Rs 25 to Rs 20. The auto drivers refused to abide by the order and held a three-day protest. Subsequent meetings ended in deadlock, with auto drivers' unions demanding Rs 23 as minimum and district administration refusing to budge. In the meanwhile, most of the auto drivers continued to charge minimum of Rs 25 from passengers.

Auto Rickshaw Chalakara Horata Samiti leader Vishnumurthy Bhat welcomed the move and said he was yet to receive the order copy and the matter would be later discussed with the other auto drivers.

However, Arun of Karnataka Rakshana Vedike auto rickshaw drivers' union said that though the minimum charge has been fixed at Rs 23, the per kilometre charge should be fixed at Rs 14 and not Rs 13, and if this demand was not met, the auto drivers would hold protest in the coming days.

This is exactly I wished. If 25 is high reduce by one or two rupees like the Siddu govt did in the case of KSRTC/City buses fares. It is just right when not even 1@ is reduced for govt bus fares, how they can expect or impose 20@ reduction for poor autodrivers? Its a simple logic. With this downward revision of auto fares people riding autos will have to bare eating chocolates in every auto travel! For those who suffer from daibetis opt for sugrefree chocolates!

This shows how influential and powerful the autoraja lobby is when the min fare in top metro city like Mumbai is 17, how come even 20 is not sustainable out here!!

Attitude of these autorajas towards passengers is nothing less than that of hooligans, especially in the night times, where it appears, they have well organized cartels to forcibly extort money from the gullible public without even downing the meters charging exorbitant fares, any attempt to confront them will lead to a gang of a dozen of them circling you and hurling all sorts of abuses including getting personal, these guys, if their extortion demands are not met with could go to any extent due to their clout, in short it is dangerous to travel in these autorajas during night hours!!

Stop Using Auto for a while and use local buses.
They must realise passengers are their king who keeps their family unstarved.

Not even 7 P.M auto charge is double sometimes even triple if its more than 5 kms.

Rather calling them as Looters instead of auto drivers.

Wonderful achievement by the D.C. unbelievable two rupees reduced from the original 25 minimum fare and brought down to 23 keep it up. Your power is useless. More permits should be issued for autos then only they will come to their senses. Time to buy a auto to make some money.

No loss no profit game is used by Govt and auto.Auto drivers Demand for 25 but DC abide by Rupees 20.So it is common strategy to take average and fix Rupees 23.So No loss No gain,But public's are again taken a ride and their demand never heard as petrol prices reduced from 80 to 60 but auto fares reduced marginally. It should be 18.75 if we calculate in petrol price.Any way Ramanath rai has to save his nose and DC has too.
