Kundapur, Feb 28: In the light of alarming increase in swine flu cases in the state, health officials raided several illegally run piggery units in and around the town on Friday February 27.

The team of two health officials got involved with the raids since Friday morning, and conducted checks in several places. At Huncharbettu in B C Road here, the officials found pigs and piglets being bred in a unhygienic and risky manner.

Several piggery units function at Batrahadi in Sangam area next to national highway a little distance from Shastri Circle here. The officials are aware that effluents from these units are being directly released into the rivulet. The officials said they had noticed two piggery units in Kharvikery too, where again, the units did not have any licence, and disposal of waste was not being done in a scientific manner.

Senior health assistant, Sadananda Hebbar, and taluk junior health assistant, Ajay Bhandarkar, told the media persons that absence of any licence from the municipality, non-obtention of requisite permission from animal husbandry department, improper waste disposal, and not using mosquito nets were the general problems with the piggery units as noticed by them. They said they would prepare a detailed report on the functioning of piggery units, and submit it to the taluk health officer, municipality, and district health and family welfare officer for further steps.

    Stan, Dubai,

Your comments reminded me of my own experience. Those olden days (60's) we had piggery at home. I used to give bath tying the pig to a tree until its colour changed to snow white. Common, the moment I released him he used to role in the same water and mud. That is why we sometimes call some dirty fellow as Dukor (pig)

The pig sty looks okay as pigs are supposed to live in dirty conditions, and the pigs look well fed and well nourished including the owner, only the surroundings are dirty!! The pigs too appear to be enthused by the cameras and new set of people gazing at them!!LOL!!

As somebody noted people accustomed to such surroundings since birth develop strong immunity to all sorts of infections. It is those who live in over protected surrounding and observe extreme cleanliness are more prone to such diseases due to weak immune system!!

BTW, though dirty, pigs tt is said that they have emotion, sensitivity, hurt feelings and easily bored. They are very sociable to humans and they are trainable. Some say they are more trainable than dogs. In laboratories. Pigs can also dream and recognize their own names. Pigs can be taught the meaning of certain words and phrases, and, after years without hearing them, will still remember what those meanings are. Mothers sing to their young while they’re nursing, pigs learn from the mistakes of other pigs, and they can play videogames too complex for 3-year old children.

A very good suggestion Mr. Thomas.

Some piggeries are run without license probably because of the hassles and the bribes they need to pay to get one. The government officials should help these piggery owners regularize their business and also educate them to run the piggeries in a more hygienic way and with environmental considerations.

Request these officers to visit wenlock or some government hospitals in Mangalore to see the hygienic. Human beings who don't have voice nor money are sleeping on those beds/place worst than the piggery farm. Have also mercy on those ... Please this will help atleast better the hygienic condition of the hospital. If you visit once you will not able to eat for days that for sure.......

Govt with Veterinary hospitals..doctors and veterinary colleges along with food inspectors/health inspectors...together should lay down Guidelines.. standards and help these cottage and farm industries and not just ban them..
    help them out..
these are earning livelihood..and self employed..
Small/cottage industries : from state govt should help them grow more food but scientifically and meet with all specifications..and not make trouble.
If they do not then fix them..all of them need education/training short term courses in this industry like in EUROPE.
    Time has come now..

Pigs like to eat and they will eat anything even human excrement ...there is a saying "what eat's the dirtiest, is the TASTIEST"!

Pigs only wallow in filth because they have no sweat glands and they need to keep their body cool, so they have no option, unless the owner provides a swimming pool or something..

Now its transferring to humans to humans and raiding these facilities seems to be a little too late.India is strange country where every officials sleep till the situation goes out of control. Then they will find some excuses like this to harass poor farmers.Till all the corrupt are weeded out of the system such problems recur and innocents will die.

    dear authorities ,
please issue guidelines and awareness on hygiene standards required at this moment during your raids instead of harassment , everyone knows we are going through a emergency medical situation of H1N1 .
in case if the piggery owner does not improve the minimum cleanliness and standards required during the second raid impose him fines for neglecting the same because disease spread through negligence cannot be compensated .

Usually those who rear pigs and brew alcohol never go out of business, however filthy the conditions may be.

The owners make the pigs grow to such humongous sizes instead of butchering them at the right time, that all we get is 75% fat and 25% meat esp. during festive seasons!

There is a scientific way to rear pigs but it is more expensive for the owner to do so...

The inspection authorities are you justified with your action? Though our country is one of the developed countries but sad part is we do not have sewerage treatment plants. The human waste/Chemical waste allows to flow to the river and sea our river and sea water is totally polluted. Due to this many sea fish/animals
are fallen sick and we are consume them as food. Could you stop this??? It appears our law is abide only for the poor people?

I think these places could have been much cleaner.People who raise pigs make lots of money.I think Rs180/kg.
Official please be on alert.I visited a piggery farm run by a dsouza family neermarga,Bhatrakody area. Its so disgusting to see the environment there. If you visit once i guess you will never eat pork again.Hotel waste stinking all around in the dirtiest bins lying around.I do not know how neighbours cope with the smell.I request concerned officials take a look and see it yourself to believe !No wonder the sickness can spread like wild wind and dying early due to unknown diseases is guaranteed.
My concern is please raise pigs on the clean and healthy farms, make sure to feed clean food. not just junk and some ones vomit from restaurants. So disgusting!Officials please check the places before you issue licence for such sick places!

I live in the area close to the piggery here, Its nightmare.I think you are mentioning about Mr felix and Zeenet dsouza piggery. We gave complaint to authorities before.I really do not understand how can anyone in right sense issue licence to keep more than 200-300 pigs in residential area? These people have money and make sure its running illegally using Neermarga panchayat licence!I do not think authorities have guts to raid this stink, unhygienic, diseases spreading place. Please do something to save human life and its urgent agenda to prevent any sickness before it can spread or goes out of control.concerned authorities please help such places to close permanently in residential areas.Let the people of the area live without sickening, foul smell and live long life.

Oh God ! Its an animal alright but man gave it existence for self profit. Why such a pathetic state for its living ? After all, the creature brings you revenue ?

More than the living conditions of the animal, the surroundings gives a puking urge ! Can you give 1% of your income to keep your own habitat clean ?

    Selfish monsters !

    Dear Lydia,

Its near impossible to keep surroundings clean if you rear pigs in large numbers. But still 'Sorpatel' is tasty

Few people earn their living with piggery. Concerned authority should issue guidelines and awareness about license, hygiene standards required rather than sudden raid and harassment. We need license for korida gudu, etc.
