Bengaluru: Water tanker rips through group of pedestrians, two killed

Bengaluru, Feb 26: A water tanker that was being recklessly driven jumped a signal at Kempapura Circle near Hebbal on Airport Road in the city, killing two persons in the bargain and grievously injuring three others. The accident occurred at around 12.15 pm on Thursday February 26.

The entire incident was recorded by a CCTV camera of a nearby mall. The footage shows the tanker ramming into pedestrians and a motorist with great speed near the road divider, killing a girl and the bike rider on the spot. The video grab also showed a traffic police constable trying to chase down the fleeing truck.

Anand (24), who was riding the pillion of a motor bike that was waiting for green signal, and Arpita (20), a BCom degree student who was crossing the road to reach her college with some friends, lost their lives instantly as the vehicle ploughed into them. The truck was stopped by policemen at the next signal and the vehicle was seized and the driver arrested, the police added.

Anand from Chikkaballapur was coming to the city in the bike of his friend, Sumanth Reddy. Arpita was crossing the road along with some others, as the signal was showing green for those wishing to cross the road then.

Students, Kusumashree and Akshatha, as well as Sumanth Reddy, were injured. They were immediately taken to Columbia Asia Hospital nearby. Some others escaped with minor injuries. It is learnt that Sumanth has suffered fracture in his leg.

The traffic and law and order police rushed to the spot immediately, and foiled attempts being made by people to torch the water tanker. They arrested driver of the vehicle, Yathish Babu (20).

Yathish claimed that his vehicle, which was going from Rajanukunte towards Marathhalli, had suffered brake failure. When the vehicle was cheked, the police found that the brake was working fine. The police have booked the driver under different sections of the act.

ACP (Traffic) Dayanand, who visited the spot, said: “The reason for the accident is yet to be investigated, following which action will be taken. There is no sky walk there and it is congested with people moving across the road. Officials should erect a sky walk so that people can cross the road easily. Also, motorists are seen cruising past at top speed, which is dangerous for both the pedestrians and motorists.”

    See make the KAS exam tough like IAS or IIT entrance to filter the wrong candidate by involving CBI for the exam paper verification.

    After following this process ping me i will give u some brilliant idea on this.


    Driving license should not be given on paying some money first off all.

    Lorry or truck drivers are unresponsive to death (feeling less)

    If again u ask them drive they do the same mistake.

    Cancel their driving license in such a way that he should not even get it again or drive even 2 wheeler vehicle also.

    If u want peace forever some strict rules needs to be taken.

    Atleast follow some strict rules wrt traffic. its proved that ifu want to earn money then go for govt jobs to earn under the table.

    Why cannot the KAS exam be like IAS or IIT entrance to judge the right person who can act on the social improvement.....

    All r equally responsible.

    Let me call up some uncle n ask for reference in govt job to spoil our country name .....

    Its things like this that makes me feel India is so backwards in terms of traffic regulations. You are literally going out of house not knowing if you'll come back home. Compare it to US and you see so less accidents and almost none that affects the pedestrians.

    Out of this topic, this is to daiji if you can keep this on news so that some safty features are taken ....As we all know the railway crossing underpass at kankandy junction is in progress and may go for a year...Meanwhile the people from jalligudde,faisal nagar and veeranagar are using the temporary provided road beside the railway bridge to bypass this work to move from these places to main mangalore. If you notice this road its a big risk to take a right turn in the main highway near overbridge when you move from padil to any of these places as the traffic will be very fast and no indications for any drivers about the right turn which is used by many vesicles frequently. More over few lorries parked besides the bridge makes it hard to notice any vechilces when taking a right turn. Request daiji to put any article so that concerned people act on it atleast put some big humps on highways and save all.

    @Kiran, it is very easy to blame the police — when me and you are equally responsible! When will we stop using mobiles when driving? when will we stop paying bribes when caught or to get work done. If we behave as responsible citizens and do not break laws, there is now way police could possibly ask for bribes!
    I do hope this unfortunate incident is an eye-opener for everyone to be the change! God Bless!!!

    Friends, the sad part with the Police whether they are from Traffic or other Law and Order departments is that they do not do their work properly . we can see thousands of people on their mobiles but not a single Police will stop them from talking on the phone while driving.

    A section of the traffic police will be hiding in dark areas and catching the culprit who crosses the signal and leave them after taking a bribe . Police from the Law and Order department will be busy Collecting 10 to 20 rupees from street Vendors post 6.00 PM . They go from vendor to vendor asking for money daily . If this is the situation what can we expect from these departments.Its said that Money a has become all sort of evil to mankind.

    RTO issues licenses on the basis of money received under the table. They are least bothered whether the license aspirant knows traffic rules or not.Money matters, human life does not.It is common knowledge that across India brokers pay money to the RTO and get licenses, the license applicant need not appear in person for the driving test. Hold the RTO responsible for these deaths. Rest in peace RTO's your day of reckoning with GOD will come, enjoy your corrupt lives for a short while now.

    @VK Hebbal,are you saying here about this case?If at all signals are out of order,he must have driven with closed eyes.I think otherwise seen People crossing road at zeebra strifes.It is everywhere same rule,Isuppose when People cross road with or without strifes has to stop or drive slow.He must have had tomatoes on eyes.

    I have been driving through Bangalore quite a bit. The apathy is the POLICE Department (RTO). Look at the cops ... standing in corners not doing a bit.

    Forget about the ATTITUDE of indian driving, it is a shame that our RTO personnel turn a blind eye to rash driving, Heavy vehicles driving on right lanes Red signal crossing but no actions whatsoever...

    What else can happen but these kind of tragedies. Who is responsible .... weak and corrupt law & order.

    Anyway, the cheapest things india today is the "human life" ... Who cares after all unless a bureaucrat or politician is moved down mercilessly...

    Please construct pedestrian underpasses in busy junctions and many such incidents could be avoided. Sky walks tend to be very high and senior citizens and people with disability would find it difficult to climb all the way up. All modern cities of the world have pedestrian underpasses they are well lit and maintained very well with CCTV's at both ends.Our corporations do not pre plan development of roads, they construct roads and dig them up again, everybody involved makes money at the cost of innocent pedestrians!!!

    Scary video that was. He just drove above such a big group of people. they were crushed down under those 10 wheels. OMG. How could such a negligence. Don't know what kind of mentality these drivers have. This was too much, not seeing such a big group of people crossing the road and drive above them.. ridiculous.

    The speed limit of the heavy vehicles including low vehicles should be below 40/km in city limit otherwise they will kill innocent people. I observing from past 4 years, the speed of the water supply vehicles is very very dangerous and they dont bother about others.

    I strongly feel the age limit to drive such heavy duty trucks / tankers need to be raised to 40 years above, these youngsters get the licence and drive these heavy trucks reckless without realising the consequences. Look at the clip how can he drive blindly on pedestrian crossing.

    Nothing is mentioned so far the cause of this accident.
    Two possibilities:
    Break failure
    pressing clutch instead of brake. For me from the news 9 picture it looked like clutch instead of brakes by the way the tanker moved freely. Last one "drunk" or chatting with co-driver etc. thereby losing concentration.
    Now whom to blame:
    BJP Govt. who planned\did the road without overhead crossing facility or the pedestrians, crossing in a hurry without a care.
    I extend my condolences to bereaved family members of the deceased and get well soon to the injured.

    I am absolutely incensed at the manner in which buses, trucks and tankers hog the road, mowing down anyone who happens to be in the way. I see that some of those who have responded have used invective - I don't blame them at all! However, that will only provide temporary relief and will do nothing whatsoever to assuage the grief of the bereaved families. Sometimes, I think that the only thing that will work is a measure for measure form of justice. What we need is a people's movement against road traffic violations - and violators!! The man must be thrashed mercilessly to within an inch of his own rotten life!!!

    Very sad! I stay close to the Outer Ring Road and take public transport to office. I know how scary life is for pedestrians in Bangalore I have to suffer this every day. I am surprised that such incidents don't happen more often.
    But, I feel everyone is to blame, not just drivers of tankers. This is what happens when people lose compassion and decency.

    Bangalore hs maniacs on the roads - worst culprits are these Tanker rivers, some BTS drivers, wingers transporting the techies to work woth their shrill ear splitting horns and the Indica Yellow board vehicles. Nine out of ten drivrs o these vehicles are illiterate - they come from rural areas and this profession gets them the income - they are a frustrated lot being on the road more than eighteen hours a day, unwind with cheap liqour, have marital problems due to their nature of work (see news papers murders / suicides / wife baering etc.). The RTO and police turn a blind eye when they ignore traffice rules and if at all stopped yiu can see them putting a few notes in the cops hands - public need to get hol f of these maniacs and thrash the hell out of them - this is the only language they understand.

    The video is so disturbing to watch. These drivers do not know the meaning of zebra crossing. He should be dealt with seriously. I think all those involved in giving him license for heavy duty vehicle and his employer too should be brought under the FIR. How can a person without the knowledge of road rules be given a license?
