Puttur, Feb 25: A dowry harassment and domestic violence case was registered in Kadaba police station against four persons including a police constable. The complainant happens to be Mumtaz, wife of Muhammed Rafique, police constable of Coastal Security Force.
Mumtaz from Melantabettu in Beltangady taluk had married Rafique from Haleneranki village in Puttur taluk in the year 2009. It is claimed that a sum of Rs 3 lac in cash and 100 sovereigns of gold had been given as dowry at the time of the marriage. Within three months of marriage, Mumtaz claimed, her husband started to pester her to bring more dowry, duly threatening her with marrying another woman in case she fails to meet this demand. She also was being pressurized to leave his home and go away, she stated.
It is said that the accused drew support for his misdeeds from father, Adam Maistry, mother, Ameenamma, and brother, Ashraf. She said that Rafique had also tried to kill her by tightening a lungi around her neck on February 19 this year, in spite of the fact that she is in the seventh month of her pregnancy. She was thereafter admitted into the Puttur hospital. After learning about this, Mumtaz's family members got her discharged from there and admitted her into Lady Goschen Hospital in Mangaluru on February 20.
Kadaba police have registered a case against Muhammed Rafique, his parents, and brother. Rural police inspector has been investigating the case. No arrests have so far been made, it is learnt.
