Mangaluru, Feb 22: Mangalore South MLA J R Lobo on Thursday February 22 launched the Gujjarkere lake development work.

The project was launched with the groundbreaking ceremony (Guddali puja).

After the ceremony, a formal function was held at the venue.

Addressing the gathering, J R Lobo said "I would like to thank the minor irrigation department for sanctioning Rs one crore for Gujjarekere lake development. In the past development works were initiated by the MCC but due to lack of funds we could not complete all the works.

"When development of any area is concerned, we have to leave aside all politics. We have to make full use of the funds for the betterment of the society," he added.

"We have prepared a perfect blueprint for the Gujjarekere lake. The wall has to be strengthened, the drain water leakage has to stopped, a beautiful garden around the lake will come up for enhancing its beauty. I wish all success for the project, and we are quite confident that before the Dasara festival, the project will be completed."

Mayor Mahabala Maarla said, "I am really grateful to J R Lobo for sanctioning funds through the minor irrigation department. It is really a hard task to avail funds for the minor irrigation works within the city. J R lobo is a man of vision. If Pilikula Nisargadhama is popular around the world, the credit has to go to J R lobo, as it was his planning and dream that became a reality. I wish speedy completion of the work and hope that this Gujjarekere lake is useful to everyone."

Deputy mayor Kavita, local corporator Rathikala, managing trustee of Mangala Devi Temple, Ramanath Hegde, opposition BJP in the corporation council Premananda Shetty, Swamiji of Ramakrishna Math and others were present.

If, and when all the lakes, tanks, water bodies are revived in coastal area, we will have all the open/bore wells fully charged even when the rains get delayed.

The other solution is to construct dams on all salt water
rivers in coastal belt which will increase irrigation for agriculture, and at the same time meet the requirements for drinking water as well.

If the lakes are allowed to encroach by greedy developers (with the blessings of corrupt politicians) we will have Bangalore like situation, which has gone far beyond control.

People from Panchayat level must come forward to demand for proper maintaining of all ancient lakes, tanks and water bodies and preserve nature too.
